PUPD for naps
« on: September 27, 2011, 20:35:10 pm »
Hi My Lo is 1 year old and for the last week I've been doing PD  - so far so good. But I'm not too sure what to do about naps. he doesn't go down so well at nap times.... should I reduce from 2 naps to 1?

Also - if he sleeps say 45min in the morning and then wakes up after 1h in the afternoon, shall I try to put him down again or let him wake up???

ANY info on naps appreciated!!

Thanks.

sounds like you are entering the 2-1 switch.  if he is only sleeping for 1 hour it probably means his A time needs to be lengthened.  i will put this over on toddler sleep for you to get more help with A times and dropping the nap.

can you post your routine for others to see?

do you have any questions specific to the PD technique at this age?  you should only be comforting in the crib, no pick up at this age.  you can also combine it with wiwo at this age so if he is not crying you may leave the room and go in only if he needs you.

Hi. thanks for the reply.

Our normal routine is:

6.00 wake up - breastmilk
7.00 breakfast
9.00 - nap - 45min

10.00 - snack - yogurt
1.00 - lunch
1.30-2.00 -nap 1h - 1.5h

afternoon snack

6.00pm - dinner
7.00 bath
7.30 bedtime

the times are approximate.

I never pick him up at this stage - only put down, hold my hand on his back/ stroke it and reassure verbally. If he's quiet or only whinging I leave and come back only when he is standing up crying.

thanks

ok if your only problem is getting him down for naps then i would start to move towards 1 nap (slowly) as this is most likely the reason for the nap refusal.

you have 2 options for starting the transition, either keep the early nap and wake him up from it (so it is short) and go for a longer PM nap, or push the am nap back and let it be long and go for a short late catnap in the pm.

so the options would look like this for this age (aproximate)

6 awake
9:30-10 nap 1 (wake at 30 min)
1 or 1:30 -3:30 nap 2 (don't wake up from this one, let it be as long as he wants)
7 or 7:30 bedtime

or:
6 awake
10-11:30 nap 1
3:30 or 4-4:30 nap 2, wake after 30 min
7 or 7:30 bedtime

the option where you wake from the first nap is usually best when you are getting nap refusal because they will then take  a second nap for you because you limited the first nap and they are tired.  there is usually less nap refusal with this method.

you will continue to shorten the one nap as he gets older and when he can tolerate about 5 hours A time you can go for 1 nap.  most bubs go to 1 nap between 12-18 mo
