MPSI-free desserts?
« on: October 03, 2011, 13:01:31 pm »
At the moment Oliver is eating well (of course!!) but I am struggling for desserts for him.

At the moment he has Ready Brek with 1oz Neocate (he actually tolerates the taste now!), sometimes a dry apricot to nibble on while I get it ready.

Lunch is soup (ie pureed veg) followed by pureed pear

Dinner is a "proper" meal pureed up (ie meat and veg) followed by a banana.  I have given him custard with oat milk, and yesterday he managed baby rice with only Neocate, so I guess she is getting used to the taste.

He is also loving breadsticks and mini rice-cakes along with his meals.

I know milk is the main source of nutrition and he still takes plenty ... but I need other dessert ideas.  He seems to get a burnt bottom with citrus fruits carrots, apples, butternut squash, soya, (Murray also did, and with kiwi and papaya, so want to avoid them just now).  I am just stuck for inspiration! I don't think he is really ready for home-made cakes etc with no sugar in them.

Well 90% of Olly's puddings are still fruit! We have the luxury of soy though and so he has soy yoghurts too. Anyway, I can't really think of much else, esp at 7 months. Just fruit and milky desserts you can make withy our oat milk  :P Sorry!

Oh - jelly? Too sugary maybe?

Yes, Murray used to have lots of soya desserts - until we realised that soya doesn't agree with him!  The problem with the fruits they can have is that they have such big appetites that it would be too much fibre to feed them enough!!  Guess will just do bigger main meal (DH had some of the same intolerences as a baby/toddler and when he was older he used to use his pocket money to buy baguettes, rather than sweets ... so maybe savoury most of the time is a good thing!! ;) )

Thanks for your thoughts

Just another thought that an egg custard (made with either oat or coconut milk) would be good and nutritious. You could serve plain or with a bit of fruit puree.

That would be better than Birds Custard which I have tried him with and he likes!

When you say coconut milk, would coconut milk from a tin be the same as the cartons? ???

I haven't seen coconut milk in cartons  :-\ ? My Sainsburys sells tins of 'Dunns River' or 'Blue Dragon' coconut milk in the 'world foods' section. It's pretty thick, kind of like single cream consistency.

I once bought coconut milk in a carton; it was beside the oat milk etc .... we buy coconut milk in tins for curries etc so that would be a good way to use up the remainder (a lot of Oliver's recipes say to use it but only small quantities)

Kai is dairy and gluten free as well as limited fruits so here is what we do:

Sago pudding with coconut milk and a touch of maple syrup.  It is lovely.  Can give a rough recipe of interested.

fried bannana in gee with a drop of maple syrup

coconut milk custard with egg yolk and GF flour- baked in oven - quite nice

stewed apples and pears

he's 18 months now so we do the occassional gluten free bananna bread or gluten free pear/pumpkin muffin

I can get it in sainsburys. It is nice though it isn't a replacement for ice cream!

Coconut custard sounds nice. Haven't tried coconut yet, on a long list of things to try yet! May try very soon.
