Not settling for afternoon naps
« on: October 06, 2011, 14:20:50 pm »
My 3 1/2-week old baby goes down for naps peacefully without crying all day until after her 4:00 feeding. Any nap after that she cries and doesn't seem to settle unless I give her a paci or rock her. Any ideas what could be causing this? She also hardly sleeps between cluster feedings in the evening unless I hold or rock her the whole time. It's very confuing to me how she can easily go to sleep on her own during the day but can't seem to do it in the evening?? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Do you think she may be suffering from evening colic? (Whatever colic really is ::) ) A lot of LOs have unesettled periods of the day at this age. I think it is okay that you are rocking her through this time, esp if she is an independent sleeper otherwise. She is so tiny still all the cuddling wont harm her or you :-*

Just to say that we are in exactly the same boat - DD is an excellent napper until the 4pm feed, then she is very hard to settle unless we go for a walk or rock her.  No idea why, but she is now 12 weeks and it's slowly getting better... She has gone down in her cot 3 times for her cat nap in the last fortnight, so I guess that's progress.  It's definitely evening 'colic' related, and I just tell myself to be grateful that she goes down so well for the other naps and BT, and not to worry that I have to AP once a day at this time... After all, eventually she won't need to nap at that time anymore, so she's bound to grow out of it!

too true :) The last nap (usually CN) is always the hard one and APing it is fine
