Transition to big bed failing miserably
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:05:45 am »
Hi there
Two weeks ago we moved our 27 month old to his big bed (baby due late Feb).  We were determined to put him back in the bed as many times as it took for him to go to sleep.  His normal sleep time was 7.30 and in the cot he was going to sleep on his own within 10-15 mins.  So far he has not been to sleep before 9.30pm.  He thinks it's all hilarious.

I am at my wits end.  I'm desperate to go to bed in the evenings earlier but I'm dealing with our boy getting up 2 secs after he is put in bed.  The last couple of nights I've got him to sleep by lying with him from 9pm. If I do it any earlier he just mucks around, clapping his hands and kicking me.

We tried to put him back into his cot, thinking he's not ready, but he had the biggest tantrum I've ever witnessed.

Any suggestions most welcome!!

Hi there...

It's quite normal for LO's to take a little while to transition to a BGB. The below link might be helpful....

Do you have a toddler gate at his bedroom door so he can't get out of his room? I would also (if you haven't already done so) store away his toys etc so that there is nothing in his room to provide a distraction. You need to take a consistent/firm line so that he knows that his bedroom is a calm place where he goes to sleep. Possibly doing a longer wind-down before he goes to bed might help to calm down before he goes to bed.

HTH?

Thanks for the link :-)

We do have a gate on his door and we've stashed most of his toys.  Unfortunately toddlers find fun in anything LOL!

The novelty should wear off, especially if you are consistent in how you are dealing with him getting out of bed.
