9 month old flails and flops around until he wakes up....
« on: October 10, 2011, 18:40:56 pm »
My DS turned 9 months on 9/27.  He has never been a great sleeper but we went from multiple NWs to just one and its to feed which we are weaning now.....Its always at a different time so I am pretty sure its not habitual.  But thats not my issue.  He does go right back to sleep after the feed so thats not my problem.  But the problem is how he wakes up....I usually can hold him off until around 1 or 2 am for the feed.

He flops around all night like a fish out of water until he physically wakes himself up!  Like last night....he went to bed at 8:30 then at 11:30pm he was sitting up crying in his crib, so I took him into bed with me to hold him off on the feed until 2.  The problem is that he does this flip flop crap.  He cant sit still for more than a few seconds it seems.  Then I fed him (1 oz formula, 3 water) so he really isnt hungry.  He goes right back to sleep too.  So I put him down aftewards and then he sleeps good for about 1-2 hours and starts that flip flopping again until he wakes himself up.  It doesnt matter whether he's in his crib or in my arms, he just keeps doing it until he wakes himself up.  Then he is awake for at least an hour crying before he goes back to sleep.  Sometimes, he doesnt actually wake himself up but he will flip flop for over an hour before he falls back asleep.  I dont know what to do.  Seems to me like something is bothering him.  Someone mentioned allergies to me.  Not MSPI allergies b/c we already went that avenue, maybe hayfever??  He has been doing this since I can remember and I was hoping he would grow out of it, but he isnt.  And its not about his routine b/c no 2 days are the same.  Saturday and Sunday were pretty similar and Saturday night he slept in his crib all night and only woke once to eat, sunday night was horrible flip flopping all over the place.

Any ideas here?? I feel so bad for him.....

Its a rough EASY! But here goes. :)
7:15/7:30 wake
7:30/7:45 bottle 6.5oz
9am solids

10/10:30-12/12:30 sleep

12:30/1 lunch solids
2/2:30 bottle 7oz

3:30/4-5/5:30 sleep(I never let him sleep past 5:30pm for nap)

5:30/6 solids
7:30 bath
8/8:30 bedtime

Really these are all rough times....he usually can go 3.5h for his A time and I dont put him to sleep unless I know he is really tired.  His AM A time is usually a little shorter b/c he doesnt sleep good so he is always tired in the AM.  Its like he doesnt want to get up but something is waking him.

Just wondering if you have seen your doctor and ruled out any possible medical issues??

Not yet, I am getting ready to make an appointment, I think. Its been going on since as long as I can remember......

I dont like my dr so I have to find a new one.  :(  I did mention something to the sleep specialist that I have seen before and hoping she can shed some light on it for me. I think he may be able to get a sleep study done now.

some babies just move a lot in their beds.  my dd2 moves all over the place, i know because i can see her on the video monitor.  dd1 still falls out of bed occasionally despite a bed railing.  i think if you rule out medical issues and his routine is fine (which it looks like it is) then i wonder if it is the prop.  you have 2 props, feeding at night - he does not need that bottle if it only has 1 oz of formula in it, i would just get rid of it altogether, and the taking him into your bed.  it is conceivable that he would wake for this extra cuddle.  i would stop bringing him into bed with you at all, comfort in the crib using PD only and get rid of the feed/bottle.  do this for a week and see if it helps the situation.  he may learn to self settle without you if you make these changes.  it won't change his floppiness in his sleep, but it will teach him that when he wakes himself up by doing this how to get himself back to sleep without relying on you.  we all wake at night normally, some of us move more than others but we need to know how to get ourselves back to sleep when we do wake up.

good luck

He can fall asleep by himself.  Its not about him being cuddled, trust me because it doesnt make a bit of difference if I am cuddling him and if thats what he wanted he would sleep just fine when I do it.  He still does it, no matter what.  And I am no longer feeding him at night.

He doesnt just move, its almost like convulsions.....but I know its not a seizure.  There are some nights when he will sleep just great so I know its not a comfort issue.

He does have night tremors but when he has those he wakes up screaming.  But I noticed when he is sleeping with me and I am touching him, I can feel his legs jolting and twitching constantly.  Its like he cant calm down enough to get a restful nights sleep.  These past few nights have been horrrible but he is getting his first tooth right now.  But I dont understand what the explanation for the last 4 months have been.....

I was just thinking discomfort could cause the thrashing. But as you say if it has been going on a while then maybe there is something else at play.
I do agree with PP in that some LOs do move a lot, and have active dreams as brenda mentions! My DS is in a sleep sack and the cot is his playground really ::) I would definitely pay the Dr a visit just in case, and to ease your mind hun.
And your LO is very cute :)

Ok, I havent posted on here in a while but DS is still doing this.....I am thinking its constipation related since every different thing I try as far as EASY goes doesnt matter.....Short naps, long naps, etc its always the same at night.  Horrible flopping all over the place and crying out.  Even while laying on my chest.....

I was thinking it could be hunger related bc he only takes in 15oz a day of milk but when I do give in and feed him he only takes about 3oz....so that cant be it.

I have an appointment with a GI specialist on Monday and hoping it will shed some light on this as I feel so horrible for him to have to be in so much discomfort night after night.

I give him at least 3 tsp of miralax a day and he still struggles to have a normal poop each day....something is wrong with my little man.  :(

I think it is wise of you to have a good talk with the GI specialist, if you feel something is wrong you are probably right sweetie. I also think it is likely that it isnt anything major to worry about so try not to stress too much. I hope you get some answers from the specialist :-*

Well I took him to the GI specialist and she thinks he is not eliminating completely. So she prescribed him Senna leaf extract (to help push things out) I was to decrease the miralax to 2 tsp a day and add a probiotic (Florastor kids).  This is day 2 and nights are still HORRIBLE!! She said if he isnt better in 2 weeks then we need to get an xray.

That is great she has given you something to work with. I hope things start to come right and you now have progress and the ball rolling which is sometimes the hardest step!

(HUGS) for the tough nights and worry you must have :-*

Today has been one week since seeing the specialist and still no improvements.  I will be calling tomorrow since they told me to wait one week.  But now he has a respiratory virus on top of this.  :(
