3hour morning nap
« on: October 13, 2011, 13:18:08 pm »
My LO is 12 weeks and likes to sleep in the morning but not the afternoon.  She will sleep for 3 hours in the morning (she is on 4 hour-ish easy) but then will just have 45 mins to 1 hour twice in the afternoon.

She goes to bed well, and sleeps through the night - although sometimes wakes after the DF and struggles to go back down but I think that is more to do with wind!

Just checking no one thinks I am lining myself up for something nasty... Currently this works with the three year old as she is happy to stay in during the morning and have some mummy time and then we can head out to do what we need to so in the afternoon and LO sleeps in the car or pram.

Tbh if it's working then I'd run with it for now.  You'll soon know if you need to start changing things if you start getting nw's or ew's.  Sounds like you have a nice little routine going!

I agree, if it's working then no reason to change it right now. We tend to have a couple short (<1hr)  naps in the morning and often a 2.5-3hr nap in the PM. I only wake him from it so he can have his 5pm feed and still be hungry for his 7.30 feed and BT at 8pm. I just wish my DS2 would sleep better in the pram and/or carseat but he has to be asleep when I put him in or it's really hard for him to drop off. He's 9wo so a little younger than your DS and we're still on 3hr EASY.

Mine did similar (well 1.5h morning, then 45m and finally 30m). Recently had to swap what is now two naps to shorter morning, longer pm and seems to have worked after a few tricky weeks. I Thought was v unusual but have found not as odd as you'd think for babies to do this. Great little baby! Enjoy. X

Thanks for the reassurance. We are having a 5 am wake a lot at the moment but it seems to be wind and she is pulling in her legs and I can tell she is trying to go back to sleep but sometimes just needs a little tummy rub and a replug so hope it is nothing else!

Ah well 5am wake up changes things  ;)  She might be catching up on lost night sleep by having a 3 hour morning nap and in the case you might have to start cutting it to get rid of the ew.  Is she going back to sleep easily enough with the replug/rub?  If she is, great but if she starts properly waking up at that time you may need a little rethink  :-*

That is exactly what happened to us around 4.5 months... and it took 3 months to fix it ;)

Ok now ladies you are worrying me... Normally she is fine but I actually fed her at 5.30 this morning as it wasn't wind and she just won't settle although she sounds like she is trying to... Grr now what to do???

Don't be worried  ;)  See how she gets on for a couple of days but you might find that she starts waking up at 530am and not going back to sleep.  If that starts happening then you'll need to start cutting morning nap so she's not catching up on night sleep by taking such a long morning nap.  It depends on the kid but with my ds2 I could let him sleep as long as he wanted in the mornings and it was only when a bit of ew started creeping in at 11 months old that I had to start limiting morning nap.

I wouldn't worry yet either... it didn't become a serious problem for us until 10 months... prior to that we had short nights at 10 hours (7pm-5am) but she never NW and napped 2 x 2hrs a day without any help at all :)  I think it was more likely her own biorhythm at that point in time.

Ok last night she woke at 2am and didn't go back to sleep for 2 hours after a poo, nappy change, wind, and a feed ... Ended up in bed with us to calm her down. Think it is a wind issue and might repost elsewhere about this u less anyone has any thoughts!
