6 month clamping mouth shut
« on: October 14, 2011, 17:20:39 pm »
My 2nd son Charlie just doesn't want to open his mouth for solids.  I started giving him solids about 2 weeks ago (He will be 26 weeks tomorrow) and to begin with he did open his mouth but now whatever foods I try he will not open his mouth!  At the start of the 'meal' I touch his lips with the spoon so he can taste it but whatever I try he just doesn't want to know.

Any tips or ideas welcomed!

Thanks

HI there you could try giving him a safe spoon to play with when he's not eating so that he can put it into his  mouth and see that its not so bad:) This is just an idea, I have not really dealt with this before.

It could well be that he's just not ready yet, or he could be a good candidate for Baby Led Weaning rahter than the puree route. Either way don't worry, maybe back of for a few days and then try again.

Have a look here for some more links and information that will help you http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=182686.0

Yep, I'd try some finger foods and see how he goes with that?  Just some well cooked vegetables maybe to start with?

Agree to maybe give him a spoon to play with or some finger foods. Anythign that is safe for him to play with and eventually put to his mouth himself. He may not be ready for solids yet so just try and get some fun into it! He will get there soon.

I agree with most who are pro baby weaning themselves. For some reason Ped's are very quick to say babies are ready for solids, but in reality babies don't actually need them until 1 year, and at that point most are already doing it by themselves. I think its much more natural and easier on your self to not stress solids, this is totally IMO tho and I hope it helps:)

My DS1 was the same when I started solids at 25wo he would just shut his mouth. Looking back he just wasn't ready. At 29wo he suddenly just started eating and was soon on normal table food and interestingly eat much better and in wide variety than my nephew of the same age who started solids 3 meals a day at 4mo.

I just kept offering foods from our plate and the occasional puree. I remember the first time he actually opened his mouth and ate what I was offering we were at a party. Not sure if it was coincidence.

Hiya
I did BLW as my LO wouldn't open her mouth for medicine when she had an ear infection and would just vomit up the medicine after I forced her to have it so I quickly realised that BLW was the way for us. She began at 6 months and only started eating enough to cut down milk around 8 months as she played with it so much and practised the hand/mouth co-ordination for ages.. VERY MESSY THOUGH!!!
