Fruit puree's
« on: October 18, 2011, 10:12:40 am »
Just a quick question....

Can baby rice be frozen, for eg, if i make baby rice with milk and add a fruit puree (apple, pear or banana) to it, can i freeze it?

Also, when you've boiled fruit to make a puree can LO 'drink the water'

I generally add the rice after because the consistency can change after something has been frozen and it may thin out more (so you have to add more rice anyways) or it can thicken (making adding the rice redundant).

That said, you can freeze rice cereal - but it will thicken like paste!

Yes, you can use the water from boiled fruit for baby but I would suggest steaming fruit instead of boiling it - boiling detroys most nutrition in the food.

Don't use water from carrots, spinach...

forgot to add that i mix fruits to avoid things being too runny/thick as needed.  Apples tend to be quite thick and plums fairly thin on their own so I mix the two together  - this also counteracts the tendency for apples to cause constipation as plums can keep things moving :)

Pears are generally fine on their own with a good consistency... peaches/nectarines tend to be runny so add some apple to thicken it up a little :)  Banana is another good one to thicken things with :)

Apple and apricot makes a really lovely thick puree.  I used to use apple to thicken things too.

Why can't you use the water that you've boiled carrots in? X

Nitrates leach into the water - not an issue for adults, but can be for babies.
