Frequent runny poos - needs solids?
« on: October 18, 2011, 20:19:32 pm »
Hi,

My LOs have had awful, frequent , runny poos for 11 days now. They are also teething at the min.  I went to the docs yesterday and he said that maybe they were ready for solids and thats why they have such runny poo?

Ive never heard of this before? Problem is, i was really set on BLW but if getting some solids inside them will help the poo issue . . ?

Any thoughts?

Kath

no, it has nothing to do with a need for solids... a runny bum can be a sign of teething for sure, though many doctors will claim that is not the case.  All of the extra saliva that they swallow can lead to a runny poo issue as well as a red bum too.

Any chance they have been exposed to something gastro related like a flu bug?

Strange that both would have it without it being something transmissible?

Yeah i thought it strange that they both have it. I dont think they've been exposed to any viruses lately but i guess u can never be sure. When the teething stops then i guess I'll know whether that was the cause . . . hope they come through soon.

I haven't started any solids yet and really dont want to (other than lettin them have a go BLW style).

So would you leave it? I just keep thinkin am i being stubborn when some rice cereal might help their poor sore bottoms ? . . . .

You might end up with the opposite problem then.  Personally, I'd ride it out for now.  Are they showing any of the signs for being ready for solids?  Sitting up, grabbing at your food, etc etc?

You could try baby rice but it could just mask another issue... If they are still taking bottles well, i would go with it for a few days...

Another thing to try besides rice cereal would be an actual fresh banana... mash a bit with a fork and add some formula.. I wouldn't try BLW unless they are sitting unassisted.

Well I wouldnt say they look massively ready no. They do watch us eat with great interest, but that can be interest in us rather than the food cant it?

By sitting well do you mean on the floor, unasissted? They can prop themselves with their hands on the floor but balance isnt great. They dont slump in their high chairs tho.

Think I'll give it til the end of the week then i might try the banana idea, thanks x

That is not a good reason to start solids early IMHO. I am not a doc though - just going by what I have heard! I agree it could mask something else that is going on.

My son always gets loose poos when he's teething.  I think the jury is out whether it's caused by the extra drool or by the fact that while they're chewing everything they pick up a bug.

Tbh as the doctor I'd be more interested in ensuring they keep up their liquids.  I would ask for a second opinion but they may suggest using some boiled water or oral rehydration salts (but see your doc first as that might not be ok for your LOs).  If your breastfeeding, the best advice I was given was to just keep breastfeeding.

It would be very odd surely even as twins to be teething at exactly the same week or to need food on exactly the same week?  Isn't it more likely that they both have a mild tummy bug?

Definitely a second opinion!

Got a second opinion today . . .

My usual GP agrees its nothing to do with needing solids and is probably a viral infection made wprse by the saliva from teething. He rekons they should clear up in a day or two but as they conveniently filled their nappies in the waiting room he sent a sample off for analysis!

So Im back to my original idea of starting BLW when they're ready.

Just really hope it clears up as we'd all like some sleep.

BTW Lansinoh nipple cream is fantastic for nappy rash!

I just heard that the other day from our pharmacist!  Makes sense really!

Glad that your normal GP has his head on correctly ;)  Let us know if anything comes back on the cultures - good babies providing samples as needed ;)

Always thought lansinoh would be good, but never had any with me at the right time (moist wound healing and all that)...but I digress...

Hope they're all better soon

:)  I never actually bought any.  My friend runs a BF support group and gets free sachets to distribute to new mums and pg women.  They never give them all away, so she just gave me a handful.  Must remember to dig them out of my coat pocket...

Yay!
Last night was the 1st poop free night in nearly 3weeks!

Results not back from their samples yet but I've had them on Lactose free formula for 24hrs. I read that viral infections could cause temporary lactose intolerance so thought it was worth a shot.
