45 minute nap help?
« on: October 19, 2011, 14:40:01 pm »
It seems a lot of people have this issue! My baby will NOT nap past 45 minutes. Occasionally he'll do an hour. He is not overstimulated as far as I know and I do the 15-20 minute winddown.

I am following the 4 hour easy exactly as it is written (within 15-20 minutes) by Tracey, but not giving the dream feed. He sleeps through the night without it, and my doctor recommended against it. He takes (4) 7 ounce bottles a day at 5 months. I have no trouble getting him to fall asleep swaddled and with no paci or other props. I can get him back to sleep with shush pat, but the second half of his nap is very disturbed sleep, he tosses his head back and forth and constantly awakes, so I stand there patting or holding my hand on him for 20 minutes before I leave. So his first 45 minutes are great, then the next 45+ minutes until his next feed are horrible.

6:30am wake
PU/PD until 7am
7:00 eat 7oz
8:30ish gets fussy
8:45 down for nap
9:30 awake PU/PD until 10
then will nap until 11 if I stay in there with a hand on him
11:00 eat 7oz
12:40 wind down
1:00 nap
1:45 awake PU/PD until he falls asleep again
3:00 eat 7oz
4:45 nap for 40 minutes
6:45 bath
7:00 eat 7 oz
7:30 bedtime

So how can I get him to nap past 45 minutes if he can clearly fall asleep with no prop and sleep through the night?? Totally confused and frustrated. I have been doing the PU/PD and BW techniques for 2 months, and it is supposed to only take 3 days!!

Should I let him CIO with me standing next to him reassuring when he wakes up at 45 minutes? Or just deal with it until he outgrows it?

Right now I feel like a prisoner and can't let anybody babysit him b/c nobody will stay in the nursery for an hour trying to get him to sleep and then KEEP him sleeping as well!

How old is he?  Have you tried extending A times a bit to see if that helps?  CIO with you standing next to him isn't effectively CIO as you're in the room with him but I still wouldn't just leave him laying there crying for ages.  Sounds like you're doing the right technics.  Have you tried w2s?

He's 5 months. I haven't tried extending A time b/c he gets cranky and fussy before the A time is up. I have tried W2S a few times but not with any sort of success, it actually seems to make it worse.

I did try CIO yesterday while patting/reassuring b/c it seemed to be more of a mantra cry with an occasional crescendo. It took 30 minutes of crying and he fell asleep and STAYED asleep. But it didn't work for the next nap, and he woke from his catnap after 25 minutes (and couldn't get him back to sleep)

Last night he woke many times (even though he usually sleeps well at night) and it took me over an hour to get him back to sleep with PU/PD.

Hugs.  Sounds like he's got himself a bit OT.  It's not CIO when you're there with them.  Actually you might need to cut A times a bit until you're on top of OT.  Might also be worth trying to APOP one nap a day so at least he gets one long one then you could always work on extending he other ones using shush/pat.  Not ideal I know but it's hard to sleep train an OT baby!
