1 nap transition with very short nap help
« on: October 20, 2011, 19:12:40 pm »
my dd will be 14 mos old next week and i was debating the 2-1 for quite some time and regularly post on the 2-1 forum but i thought I'd branch out a bit now that we have commited to it and not getting great results to see what everyone thinks...the girls on their are amazing and a great support system but I'd like to maybe get some advice possibly from someone who has already sucessfully gone through it maybe and has some pointers for me

we did the switch because we had pretty regular pm nap refusals...would just play away and never sleep...so the road I chose was to hop right to a later nap time which was really only an hour if that later than her usual nap time...the first few days went fairly well..with 1.5 - 1 hr 45 min naps and the EW's and NW's we were also dealing with went away right around the same time, but then the other day she woke at 7:40 rather than her pretty regular 6:30 wake up so i decided it was a good time to push the nap a bit later in the day because I would like a later BT than the 6-6:30 we have been doing to then hope lead to a later wake up..my perfect world...

7 am wu
12-2+ nap
7-7:30 BT

that would be perfect but right now it's not even close to that...and ever since i pushed her nap later than one day that she started her day later i have lost the longer nap...yesterday and today she only did 1 hr!  that's it..all day!  I did an EBT of 6pm last night and sttn til 6:30...went back to doing 11:30 nap time (as that was the set nap time I chose at the start of this a few days ago and seem to rear a descent 1hr 45 min nap) but still just a brief 1 hr nap sigh...waking up at 12:30...its' now 3pm and I have decided to try for a pm nap today to hopefully allow a later BT but so far it started with tears and now she is just playing in her crib...so I am guessing EBT at 6pm again!  viscious cycle...

i think it's clear she only wants the 1 nap a day with all these 2nd nap refusals but any advice on how to get this 1 nap to go longer?  what am I doing wrong?  so this is what has been going on....

6:30 wu (her norm)
11:30 nap (lately just 1 hr :/)
6pm BT

so in short my questions are...

1) how do I get her to nap for a longer period of time i.e. 2+ hrs
2) what is a good set mid day nap time
3) what is the best plan of action on days like today where the 1 nap is incredibly short

anyone who has been here and can hand over some good tips to get through this and reach our long 1 nap goal would be much appreciated...thanks ladies

Hi there, we were lucky and when F switched to 1 nap he finally napped beautifully.  Your LO sounds like she got in a bit of an UT/OT loop there, I would say that you may need to bump up that A time to get a longer nap.  F was on a crazy high A time (7 hrs some days!) but he was doing up to 3 hr naps.  We moved him to 1 nap at 12 mths.  We didn't have a choice on the time because he was in daycare.

Your plan of action on the short nap day is really what you are doing...early bedtime.  But when she does a stellar night like she did previously, you can bump up that next morning A time to see if that helps the nap.  So from a 6:30 waking, I'd be aiming for a 12 noon or 12:30 pm nap.  And you have to stick with it until she gets used to the longer A time, at least 3-5 days.  Will she AP a PM cat nap?  If so you could do a short 20-30 min PM CN and then put her to bed later than you normally would.  That might reset your day.

The thing is, until she gets used to the A times being so high it sometimes takes all this bouncing around between 1 and 2 nap days and EBT.  It's a pain with any transition, but particularly with this one.
The tweaking never stops!

Well did a 6-6:30 sttn did an 11:30 nap again (had been yawning since 10:30) she let out a cry after 30 mins went right back to sleep and woke at 12:30 (1 hr) sigh tried a CN yesterday but she refused so did EBT guess I will try the same today and see. So u think I should do 12 or so rather than 11:30? Even though she had a great night I figured it was catch up so I should stick with the earlier nap time of 11:30 as I said she was clearly tired at 10:30 and I pushed that.

Melissa you poor darling, you have totally being doing everything right (Wendy I have been on the 2-1 with Melissa) I am sorry things are still so rough with these pesky 1hr naps. Go the STTN though :)

Melissa these 1hr naps have stuck for a while havent they? I wonder (and not sure which is why Im kind of asking you Wendy :P ) if these are habitual? Esp because the 1hr naps come with different As etc. Could Melissa try W2S to see if her LO would then sleep longer, I guess you would need to try a few diff times but either ~22min or ~35min marks?

I am not sure if this works on 1hr naps though :-\

Well now we are on day three of one hour naps.  but before that we were doing fairly well for a solid week or two with one hour 30 minutes and one hour 45 minutes. maybe it has become habitual NOW?! I just AP'd with an extra bottle of which she only drank 3 oz than I put her in the crib. She wasn't too happy at first but has quieted. So IF she falls asleep do I just let her go or cap it. I HIGHLY doubt she will go to sleep. Ugh I am lost no clue how to get those longer naps back. I felt do close with 1 hr 45 mins. Maybe that stopped working after a few days cause I need to push her even later now?  Ugh rush she could just tell me.

Oh, if only day 3 then you probably alright and its not habitual. For some reason I thought you had had 1 hr naps for over a week. Mushy peabrain I have sometimes.

It certainly is starting to feel habitual :(  so she'saim bed 6:10 pm. Guess I will do 11:45 with an early lunch for a week and see how it goes.  Keep you all posted as always. She hasn't gone right to sleep yet like she usually does...weird. I feel so guilty for not having gotten this right for her yet :/
