5 week old won't settle after night feeds
« on: October 23, 2011, 19:40:23 pm »
Hi,

My DD2 (almost 5 weeks) is having trouble settling after either one of her 2 nf. She feeds 3 hourly day and night (won't cluster feed) and has a df at 10pm. When she wakes for a nf she is often fully awake and it can take 1.5 hours to settle. I have the room dark, no interaction etc. She has some issues with wind and I usually find the 4 or 5am feed the worst to try and settle her. I have to hold her until she falls into deep sleep (20mins) before I an transfer her back to bed otherwise she wakes up and we have to start the whole process again. Patting in her bed seems to make her more alert. She takes a dummy but only when she is really tired, if I offer it to her after a feed she will spit it out.
Sometimes I can put her down when she has just fallen asleep but it's hit and miss. The long nights are starting to take their toll and DD1 is bearing the brunt of it.

She self settles during the day just not at night. I had the opposite problem with DD1!

I do most nights but she fights it! This morning she woke at 5.30, I fed her, put her bak down and she grunted away for 30mins or so (no crying or grizzling). She musn't have slept as she finally let ot a little cry so I gave her the dummy and she went straight to sleep

I am having the same problem!  I just came here to post for some suggestions!  My DD is 4 weeks and has so much trouble sleeping at night.  Her trouble is she doesn't like sleeping on her back.  During th day if I need to wake her, I just lay her flat somewhere and her eyes pop open.  I do attempt to swadlle and put in bed for most naps, but with an 18 month old- it just doesn't happen sometimes.

At night she wakes for her nf, and then can't resettle.  I've tried holding her to sleep, but as soon as I lay her down, her eyes pop back open.  I've tried rolling her onto her belly, and then rolling her back onto her back after asleep, and have the same problem.  I wait at least 20 min until she has fully fallen asleep.  She takes a paci, but grunts and groans, and struggles against her swaddle when on her back.  She spits the paci out, I put it back in for hours.  Last night I was up from 1:30- 5:00.  She would fall asleep and startle awake over and over.  I finally nursed her in bed at 4:30, and she still didn't fall asleep after her feed.  DS always ate at night, then fell right back to sleep.  Naps were the issue with him.  Sigh.  I could try some white noise maybe?  I'm exhausted!

I'll try the towels tonight.  She was up from 2-5 again last night.   :(  So sleepy!
