serious problems with 2 yo bedtime....not getting any better
« on: October 28, 2011, 00:50:11 am »
My 2 yo transitioned really well from crib to big boy bed in july. Really easy transition no problem whatsoever.  Two months later (2 weeks before DS2 arrived) he started getting out of bed and leaving room. We have tries so many approaches now. Its been 2 months of hell at naptime and bedtime. Once in a while it goes smoothly but its the exception not the rule. We tried being nice and encouraging him to go back to sleep. We tried the approach where you make no eye contact and don't speak. Now my Mom who is around because I have a 2 mnth old to deal with as well lies in bed with him forever. It works but takes forever and only really works with her. With my husband or myself it usually results in a creaming match once we leave and we just end up holding the door shut most nights. All in all the whole going to bed process is taking upwards of 2 hrs or more. Just cant continue. I have a baby and I'd like to have a life. Naptime is similiar. At night he will also tell us he has to poo or pee to get us to let him out. Hard to say no to that. Anyway at my wits end here. I really need some concrete suggestions.

Here is a typical day:
6-7 up and milk/bfast
morning activity (pre-school/swimming/etc) with a snack at some point
12 lunch
1-3 : some kind of nap.....usually only an hr as takes so long to get him to stay in room and sleep
3: afternoon snack
5: dinner
630: sesame st
650:bath
7ish: books/talk about day/say goodnight to all his stuffed friends (all occurs in pj"s in room)
730-10: kid finally falls asleeep

PLEASE HELP!

What is his wind down routine? 30 minutes might not be long enough?
I would try bath right after dinner, then snuggle on the couch with you or dad for sesame (which you might consider skipping, since sesame can be very exciting and not calming him down, maybe tape it and show it in the morning instead?)
Does his bath calm him down or wind him up? If the first, I would lengthen it, if the last maybe skip it?
Then put him to bed at 6.30pm, so you're less stressed about him falling asleep, since he's in there so early and read to him (laying down) but slow books (IYKWIM, there's books out there with lots of adventure, that might not help) talk about the day and about the nice night that's coming.

What also helps is pressure massage. Make him floppy (that's what I call it to my kids) start at the extremities (feet) and squeeze starting at the toes and working your way up. don't be too gentle, squeeze kinda hard, to make them floppy and make sure he starts to get floppy, if he's not floppy, you can stop rubbing/squeezing.
Rub his tummy, not squeeze it and then move to the fingers. Rub his eyebrows, forehead, rub the cheeks etc and keep telling him what you're making floppy. OR say that you're making sure his whole body goes to sleep. (i.e. your toes are asleep now, now you leg is asleep, your bumm, your tumme etc)

Anyway, I hope this helps. My boys went through this and this helped. Lavender oil helpt too. AND just as a FYI they are now GREAT sleepers, except for the 14 month old ::)

So today we had no nap due to pre-school halloween party in morning and serious sugar high:)  Instead we did "quiet reading time" which was moderately successful.  Had a very grumpy little boy by 4pm. But he was asleep with little fuss by 7pm. We started the whole routine earlier (he actually asked to start earlier he was soo tired) .  So do we say bye to naptime for good and hope he gets used to it for the sake of an easy bedtime???

Sounds like a plan, but he might need a short nap every other day or so to not get OT. OR an earlier bedtime.
If he gets OT, you will get Early Wakings...

multiple night wakings might mean some OT, but don't loose hope! He just needs to get used to the less nap. Just keep doing either small naps if it seems like he really needs one or no nap and early bedtime. Maybe even make it a 6pm bedtime to make up for the loss of sleep and slowly move it backwards.
Good luck!!!

And about the where did you go wrong part....I don't think you did, sometimes you just need some tweaking. I am in the same boat with my 1 year old, he was amazing, now, not so much. They need some tweaking and they'll go back!
