I HATE bedtime .
« on: October 28, 2011, 19:28:28 pm »
It's just getting ridiculous. Regardless of whether he's OT, UT, just right; whether he's had a nap or not; ill or fighting fit, bedtime is a battle.

Every. Single. Night.

He's in and out of bed a zillion times - if we ignore it he cones down stairs, if we're calm he keeps doing it over and over. We can't shut the gate because he has an earsplitting yowl that would wake Abi up.

As a result the last thing he hears before he goes to bed at night is me or DH being cross with him.  :'( I hate it.

Please please please does anyone have any ideas?

Is he becoming the king of delays??  Meaning, mom I need a glass of water, mom I need a hug... etc?

Nope. Doesn't have any reason for being out of bed as such. He just lurks silently until we notice him. Or rather we get fed up of pretending not to notice him.

LOL!  Makes me think he is a bit UT ;)

Does he still nap?  What is his typical day?

Interested to see his day too. Steph have you talked about it with him in the day? Things are far from perfect here but a stern but gentle talk with DD, in the day, has helped a lot. As has the groclock, do you have one? She has it drummed into her that blue means STAY IN BED!! Espexially if you permit reading or singing, ie not just enforce you must SLEEP yk? x
Blessed mum to two home-birthed darling water babies

hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race

Steph he sounds UT to me too.  F has been lately saying 'No bed, I not go to bed now, I stay downstairs' and although so far he's gone because we're firm, I know that the nap days are numbered and he's not as tired at 7 as he once was.  What is his day normally?

I think you may have to let him yowl to show him you are consistent and firm.  Can you put some white noise on for Abi and make it loud?  Or relocate her for a while until this is sorted?  I honestly think he's testing boundaries and if he's not really tired enough to sleep, he's going to use it as a good time to test his theories.  What consequence are you giving him for his behaviour?

Call me crazy, but if I wasn't tired, I would be pretty unimpressed with being put to bed and then suffering a consequence for not sleeping.

I would try pushing bedtime back 30 mins or cap his nap.

No it's not crazy.  But then again, sometimes you never know if they are tired or not, we still can't tell with our kid.  90% of the time he's tired but there is that odd time that he doesn't SEEM tired...

In our house bedtime is bedtime.  Even if you don't sleep, you stay in your room and rest, read, wind down.  Otherwise they start dictating when bedtime is and then you have chaos.

True enough - I wanna know if he is still napping!  Could be that dreaded 1-0 starting ;)

Aaagghh! I wrote a mammoth reply yesterday about his routine and it's disappeared ???

Anyway basically -

We are in the 1-0 transition but as I said, it honestly doesn't matter if he's had a nap or not. Wendy, bedtime is bedtime here too - it has to be or we never get dinner!! (DH doesn't get in until 7pm)

So our days yesterday and the day before (not today as we were visiting friends 3hrs away)
Thursday -
WU - 6.20am
Refused nap (despite being ill)
BT - 7.30pm
Eventually stayed there and went to sleep at 9.15pm. Then had 4NW

Friday -
WU - 6.45am
Nap - 1.30-2.30pm (he was asking for it)
BT - 8pm (he looked awful - massive bag under his eyes)
Eventually went to sleep 9.30pm after being shouted at. :( 1 NW

What consequences should there be? ??? I can't think of anything relevant or logical.

He's not particularly motivated by stickers - and he used to be great at not getting out of bed unless his car lights were on (not a groclock, but lights on a timer).

Hmmm, he shouldn't be UT given the length of his days without a nap - or even with a one hour nap really.

I'm stumped.  It must just be a phase of testing limits... What about trying a special breakfast if he stays in his bed all night?
