TT affecting sleep
« on: November 08, 2011, 01:45:51 am »
I have a 19 month who has done excellent with his toilet training and is now completely TT including naps and night.  But I think that this is half our problem.  DS used to STTN and wake up at about 7.00am.  Since TT he has been waking up to go to the toilet at 5am and then not going back to sleep.  We have him in a nappy but it is always dry in the morning.  Any suggestions?

Hi hun, I am going to pop this over to Toddler Sleep to see if we can get a few more experienced eyes on it for you.  :)

Thanks Bex, I wasn't sure if I should put it in Early wakings, toilet training or toddler  :D.  Hopefully someone will have some ideas on what we can try.

We've just gone through this with Ethan as we took him out of nappies at night about a month ago.  We had a few 5/530am wu's to go to the toilet and he never goes back to sleep if he wakes up at that time!  All I did was make sure he went back in his bed until his light comes on at 7am and now he doesn't generally wake up to use the toilet till 630/7am.  Might be different tactics though seeing as he's that much older!

Thanks Karen, I should have just gone straight to you!!! ;D  We do try and put him back to bed, but he has also recently been moved into a toddler bed, so he finds it quite novel to be able to get out of bed.  When he wakes up he goes to the toilet and then goes back to bed, but within about 10 mins he is up telling us he is hungry.  He has been quite sick over the past week with vomiting so he probably is hungry.  Over the next couple of nights we are going to try putting him to bed 1/2 hour later (he currently goes at 7pm), limiting his liquid intake after 5pm and giving him biscuit snack just before bed.  Hopefully some of this will help as 5am is waaaaaay to early for me, especially waking up to the baby during the night.

limiting his liquid intake after 5pm

That's what I did.  He always had a cup of milk right before bed so stopped that.  Now he has milk with his meal at 5/530pm and that's the last drink he gets before bed at about 7pm.  He goes to the toilet right before bed.  We haven't needed to 'lift' him but I know that some people do if you've thought about trying that?

It pays to be consistent though.  Amy was dry at night at 27 months and we didn't have ew but when she wet the bed once we took her into our bed.  She then wet the bed the following three nights until we doubled up her bed and whipped the wet sheets off and put her straight back in.  She never wet the bed again so seemed like she was doing it as knew she'd be allowed to come into our bed!

We have gone through stages over the last couple of years of Ethan waking up in the night and asking to go to the toilet and that started about 20 months old.  I don't know what you can do about it though as you can't exactly not take them!

but he has also recently been moved into a toddler bed, so he finds it quite novel to be able to get out of bed.

We only let Ethan out of his cot a few months ago so that's pretty much why I didn't even attempt to night train him before he moved to a BBB.  Good luck with that  ;) :-*
