When do you feed solids?
« on: November 11, 2011, 16:10:53 pm »
DD is 6 1/2 months and has been doing great with solids. I have been giving them to her about an hour after she has her bottle. well I took her in the dr and he said that the correct way of doing it was to give her solids right after her bottle. So now I am confused, what is the correct way and why?

I guess you wait an hour as they won't be hungry enough when their little bellies are full of milk!

That is what I thought but he said when we eat we only eat once and stop when we are full, why feed them an hour later? he said maybe it they were an obese baby he could understand that. but i tried yesterday and she had no interest right after her bottle

You can't really compare the eating habits of an adult to a baby :o. Babies tummies are small and need to be replenished frequently.

I think opinion varies but the idea is to not replace too much of the milk too quickly.  I breastfed and because my son breastfed on demand (frequently), I just chose times of day when he didn't 'usually' have a feed but it varied from day to day whether it had just been before the time he fed or just after.

The point of solids is to get them used to different tastes and textures and LOs are likely too full after a milk feed to want solids. I think that's the point.
Although I read somewhere that at a certain age you can start offering solids first and then a bottle after, or a bottle immediately followed by solids. Anyone know the age? At what point do you no longer wait an hour?

from one onwards you offer the solids first. I think waiting an hour is so hopefully they have digested a bit of milk and so are interested enough.
