Great sleeper turned bad?!
« on: November 14, 2011, 20:00:53 pm »
Hi!
My DD is almost 11 months old.  She has been a great sleeper (angel/textbook baby)!  She usually sleeps at night for 11.5-12 hours straight!  The last two plus weeks the nights have been crazy.  She has been waking sometimes up to 4-5 times per night.  The last few nights it has been 2x.
She has been waking at around 11:30pm then again an hour later and I can't seem to get her to calm down.  Then sometimes an early morning wake.

I have thought it has been teething but her days aren't affected by teething really at all.  She naps fine and is happy.
When she wakes I try to give her teething gel but she won't let me and screams louder so I've been trying Tylenol.  Sometimes that works, sometimes not.

I've been so exhausted lately I've been nursing since nothing seems to calm her down.  But I don't want to keep using that and develop bad habits.  When she wakes she will either be crying or just moaning like she is in pain.
She does have one top tooth that hasn't cut all the way thru yet.  Only a tip of it is thru.  Does each tooth really take that long to cut thru (2 plus weeks)?  Her other ones haven't been nearly this bad or long.
Or could this be hunger/growth spurt?
She is tiny for her age.
She doesn't use any props (no paci, etc) and is usually great with putting herself back to sleep.

Her normal day routine is...

Wake and E (nurse): 8:15am
Breakfast:9:30 and then snack 10:30am
A: 8:15-11:30 am (3-3.5 hours)
S: 11:30-12:15/30 (45-60 mins)

E (nurse): 12:30/45pm
Lunch: 2:00pm
A: 12:30-3:45/4pm (3.5 hrs)
S: 3:45-5pm

E (nurse): 4:45/5pm
Dinner: 6:15
A: 5-8pm
Bedtime nurse: 7:45/8pm
She then would normally sleep from 8:15pm-8:15am.

Anything in my rountine I should change that would help?  Is this related to teething?
I appreciate your thoughts!  Last night I had an exhaustion meltdown:(

Thanks!!!!

Hi there, sorry you haven't had a reply sooner. I think you are spot on with the teething. Teething can cause real problems for some LOs and their sleep, but not always cause any issues in the day when they are busy and occupied.

The fact that pain relief works some times and that your DD won't let you near her teeth to put on gel would certainly suggest that there is some pain going on there. Teeth can take ages to come through, it seems to take weeks for my DD and then just as one comes through another one starts!  ::) Try to keep medicating before BT when you think she is suffering and use the gel (if she will let you).

You are quite right that feeding her when she wakes could soon become a prop, so she will need the comfort to get back to sleep. If you are OK with that and prepared to wean at a later stage then by all means use that, if not then I would try to avoid feeding her in the night and try to settle her with a hand on her back or your voice. Obviously if she is very upset and you can't console her then you will want to PU and give her a cuddle. Just try to PD before she is asleep again to avoid her becoming dependant on you.

Teething can be a struggle at night and sometimes you just have to go with it and get by as best you can, trying to keep the APOP to a minimum. HTHs.

Thanks for the reply!
Last night I gave her Mortin and she only woke once so that is good.
I will try not to nurse so I don't create another issue out of an existing issue:)
It is crazy how some teeth or so much worse than others!
Thanks!!!

No problem. Glad you had a better night and the pain meds worked. Yep teeth cutting are just so awful for some LOs and others sail through it with no problems. Hope you both get a break from it soon.
