Encouraging more fluid intake?
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:39:38 am »
DD is just a year and we are in the process of dropping to 2 bottles a day... she has had a sippy since she was 7 months old but really doesn't take much from it... on a good day, she might drink 1.5 ozs throughout the entire day!  On a bad day, the amount she drinks is negligible really.... just sips randomly.

How in the world can I get her to drink more from it?  I have tried water, watered down juice, formula... no change in her interest/intake level.

It makes me worried about reducing her formula intake as she will happily take her bottles... and I should mention, she won't take water from her bottle either ::)

World's pickiest kid.

Hun have you tried a straw sippy? I find Zac drinks a lot more from it than the other sippys with spouts...why? I have no idea? May be worth a try though ;)

I will venture out into the freezing temps on Monday to get one for her (when DH is home and I can leave Alexandra at home)... it's -20 here!  GROSS.

In the meantime - we are going back to 3 bottles again.... I swear this kid will be drinking formula until she goes off to school!

OMG that is COLD! I thought we had cold winters, nothing like that!
I hope it helps :)
We have just dropped (dropping) to 2 feeds (1 bottle, one BF) and I am struggling. That said Z is still not himself following the MMRs he has had quite a strong reaction side effect wise :(

LOL!  That's just the first couple of weeks so far with winter here... it typically gets to -40 C ;)  That will last 2-3 weeks straight, then it warms back up to -20!  Our winter starts in November and the snow doesn't totally melt until April.  It sucks.

I just find my son doesn't drink a whole load but I do find when I put a sippy cup of water out on the side where he can access it, he then walks over and picks it up and drinks himself.  I'd always use water if you're doing this though because otherwise it could be bad for her teeth.

-20????  OMG!

well... I actually got out all of the sippys that I have and tried them myself... the Avent ones are the easiest to get the water out of for sure...

She just will not drink much plain water so I have resorted to putting 1/3 juice, 2/3 water in it to entice her and it does seem to be helping a bit... will be cutting down the proportion of juice though once she is starting to drink better :)

She drank 1/5 ozs in one go yesterday!  Granted, that was the only real drink she had from it.  Ugh.

I have reduced the amount of formula in her bottles, she only gets 6 ozs in the morning and then 6 ozs before her nap just before lunch time... I top each up with 1.5 ozs of extra water... bedtime bottle is 8 ozs plus 1 oz of extra water... so she is getting a decent amount overall... I'm just scared to drop a bottle :/

Do you offer water throughout the day? I find Z will drink a fair bit in the middle of his meal IYKWIM? Places like in his car seat I will offer him a quick drink or while he is playing... to start with he never drank much though.

LOL you sound like me, I am down to 1 bottle, 1 BF but every few days I throw in another BF because I dont think Z is quite ready ::)

Yup - her sippy is always right by her side... I harass her with it on a regular basis :)  She won't take a sip during a meal though... she turfs her sippy to the floor... and if I hide it and then offer between different foods, she refuses.

Apparently ::)

Managed to get a total of 2 1/2 ounces into her today - that's an ounce more than yesterday!

Tbh, my son has been drinking way less since the weather got cooler, he's not constipated, he isn't dehydrated, I just figure he's not all that thirsty.  I offer him water from my glass too but I don't drink loads in a day either.
