Surely she's not ready to drop a nap at 18 months???
« on: November 25, 2011, 04:45:52 am »
So we've just finished our marathon adventure across the country and we're trying to establish routines again. 'Try' being the operative word.

I can't seem to find E's rhythm. For the past month it's been an early morning nap and then sometimes a pm one (while driving) and then bed whenever in the evening. She's been on one 2 hour nap since 12 months. Sometimes if it was a rough night, she'd happily get woken at 3 hrs.

But now I can't figure where she's at. Anyone have a sample for an 18 month? Nights are ok with one NW or an EW or both and I'm throwing in a transition to a BGB also ::). Sorry. I know that's a lot but after almost a month there was no getting her back into her crib. She's been 100% cuddled to sleep and working on weaning that too.

But the EASY is where I'm struggling. She's up usually 8am and that's the only consistent thing. Today I tried a 1pm nap and she bounced and chatted for half an hour before finally showing tired cues. I capped it at an hour as I wanted enough A time to get her to bed but I think that was a mistake. She was pretty grumpy for the first half hour or so after waking. And she's just not a grumpy kid so pretty easy to see.

Bedtime was 45 mins of farting around and no way was she ready to sleep. Finally cuddled to sleep and asleep at 830.

Today looked like:
W 8am
S 130-230
Bed 830pm

Surely this isn't enough? I know there's a lot of adjustment going on and that's why I haven't posted until now but I'd like to get an idea of what her day should look like. She's always been a great napper and I DO want to get back to independent sleep but there's a lot going on with everything that I don't want to bite off more than I can chew right now. Typically for her AP'd sleep still gives a STTN and it's really not causing a lot of problems that I can tell.

We're working on the AP'd bit with the twins and that's going great. Some nightmare nights but for the most part sleeping through for 10 hrs or so in their own rooms so a work in progress for them.
Thoughts on this?

TIA

Also meant to mention that she's hit another language explosion so her laying and counting to nine isn't uncommon right now. I know that's got to be contributing also.

She doesn't seem tired during the day, except when she wakes. That's where I'm confused. It's not typical for her to be tired when she wakes or to refuse sleep after. If I could get an idea of where she 'should' be, I'd try to muddle through all of the other developmental and adjustment stuff. But I know there's a sleep issue there too.

Sounds like she's just got way too much going on and is all out of sorts.  Don't worry, she'll get through it and find a new rhythm!

Just for reference, here is what F is going at the moment:
7am wake
1-3pm nap
8pm bed

We've just come out the end of some 18mo sleep regression stuff where we had lots of EWs, some short naps, and a few nights of BT resistance.  He seems to have settled into this new pattern.

I wouldn't wake her from her nap for now, she might just be mega OT and needs a bit of catch up.

(((hugs))), I can't believe all you've just been through so it's no doubt you're all still trying to settle into your new life.  :-*

I agree Vicki, she sounds completely OT. You've all had such an upheaval. I'd also let her nap as long as poss. Developmental leaps have always knocked DS's sleep completely off track too.

Hugs lovely xxx

Thanks all :-*

Have I mentioned I love this site for that? Always happy to have outside eyes on our situation :)

She was up a few times last night and with the big girls up once each and a major 1hr meltdown from J, I simply crawled in with E at 430 as I just couldn't do it anymore :-[  Dh would happily go, but she's only wanting me and would wake the entire house of sleep resistant children. Since she was sitting up and chatting about Caillou at 430 after only 8 hrs of sleep, I'm inclined to think OT also. We're going out this morning so she'll likely get the early morning nap.

My gut is telling me an 1130 nap might be the timeframe for her and let her go for as long as she needs to get caught up. She used to nap at 12ish.
Will try that today unless anyone has any other ideas :)

Thanks again :-*

Thinking some massive over stimulation with the over tiredness too. Nap was at 1230 in the Ergo when we were at a mountain park today. I know I should be working on her sleep, but I thought for sure the 1.5 hrs she spent in the van before we got there surely would have knocked her out. I managed to get her into her seat still asleep and she slept for a good hour. 130 she woke and was bouncing until she fell asleep at 9pm

I fully expect some nw's tonight. She wouldn't lay down and was practically throwing a fit, so ended up being cuddled to sleep.

DH goes back to work on Monday, I'm thinking it'll be our week to work on napping so long as the big girls cooperate.
