settle, resettle, settle, resettle 4 mo
« on: November 26, 2011, 00:12:11 am »
I know Levi has been sick but this was happening even before this, he will sleep till the 45min mark and I will resettle him, then he wakes up again after 5 mins, so I resettle him again, then he wakes up after 5 mins, then its to the point that as soon as I start to stop patting him he will start squirming and wriggling, i speed back up again and he stops moving and relaxes back into sleep again.

Its so frustrating cos its like he cant stay asleep! the other day I patted for 50mins!! every time i slowed down or stopped he would start squirming again and i would need to do it again, he seems asleep while I am doing it so how do i account for A or S with that?

oh and why the heck is he doing it, Im about reading to pat him through the floor!!!!

Hey Jo,
Bear with me whilst I give you some background on my advice... Prior to wednesday we couldn't do more than a 30m sleep and extending went much the same as what's happening with you. Wednesday was in town and NONE if not less than 2hr of day sleep in dribs and drabs... (Fortunately our nights are rarely any trouble) Come thursday I watched like a hawk (hard with a 2yo) and my lo started sucking his fingers - his cue for sleep I'm learning - so I walked with him on my shoulder for 10mins then started windown and woohoo 1hr30 sleep with w2s at 25mins.(wake2sleep needed his eyes to actually open to count though). did this same thing every nap for the next three days and woohoo.... good naps. Today I didn't wake too sleep for the lunchtime nap and I've been having the same dramas, settled back down and cry back up again..That has then screwed his other naps up as I missed his cues and he's jolting alot.
My suggestion(and I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you) is to try w2s. i wasn't actually getting his eyes to open previously -and it;s a fine line between wake and AWAKE, but that's what is working for me. so far. I can't tell you how to fix it once your at the resettle stage (i'd just get up cos i can't make it work) but try and do w2s and catch his cues for his first nap - because i reckon if i screw that one up, the rest go down the gurgler too...Obviously my advice is three days in practice, but it's sorta working here so maybe it'll work for you.

Hugs Hun, I found with these ridiculous 45 min naps I had to spend 20mins getting Z back into a deep sleep. If I only did 5 his eyes popped back open over and over too. :(

I reckon! My head is done with trying everything - and trying to be consistent.... stuff that. w2s, httj, at times i wouldn't mind asking for a videotape of just how Tracey managed (she did have two kids too didn't she!)mmmm, then i think hey it's just developmental so if we can last .... another 2 months... we'll be onto something different (worse...hahaahaha - wicked sarcastic laugh that one!) so why fight the inevitable!?!

Hey Jo, I know it's not massively helpful but I never ever bothered with extending DD2's naps, just too impossible with a 21mo running around :P Sometimes she took 6 x 40 min naps in a day!! Anyway by 8mo (which is probably later than those who did spend the time extending) she magically starting taking longer naps and we never looked back. Hope that gives you hope!

LOL Stevesmum!! I think you are going slightly insane with all this sleep training.

Charlibob - I kinda just let him do that yesterday, he had 5 naps all up (its even more exhausint being up and down, up an down with naps)
btw I LOVE both your avatars! too cute!!!

It sux aye Jo, really u cant win. I found extending tiring but the me time was worth it. Other days I was so sick of it I just did what charlibob did and pd more. Either way is a PITA. I have no idea how I will do it next time round if I need to!

A few of my friends focus on only extending the first nap of the day, then relaxing on the rest ie one in the wrap, 2 shorties in the cot etc.

he was in teh wrap this morning, he only sleeps 20mins in that, takes him an extra half an hour to fall asleep in it so he becomes OT
hes sick so I guess theres not much point reviewing this anymore. everytime i try to fix his naps he gets sick
