I'm not sure what to do . . . .
« on: November 28, 2011, 14:19:59 pm »
DD2 has recently had a few nights where she started STTN and then illness hit and we had some set backs, then she seemed ok and now I think teething is causing some NWs.  I've been medicating her the past few nights because I can see the tooth poking its way through.  When she wakes, she isn't crying but just up, whining a little, flailing her arms, etc. If it's time for meds, I'll give them and can usually get her back with a replug and some patting.  But she'll go through a period of an hour or so, where I think I've gotten her back to sleep but then keeps waking up.  Again, not crying but not sleeping.  I've been using a NF as a last resort because I know she can make it through the night without it as she had done it before all of this started. It's hard to just let her go for a bit (the worst she ever does is mantra, I do not mean CIO at all) because then she nor I are sleeping. I'm just not sure how to approach this because I know she is teething but I'm not sure if this is the cause of the NWs because as I said, she isn't crying or showing signs of discomfort.  She is a generally happy baby so she can be hard to read at times.  I have a post in Naps too  ::)

It sounds like teeth to me hun. My DD was and still is a terrible sleeper when she is teething, it really effects her badly. Some nights she will be up and screaming but others she will be just as you describe, just being unsettled and awake for hours. As long as you are trying to keep the AP to a minimum whilst still being there for your DD you are doing all you can really. Hopefully it will pass soon for you both.

Thanks Bex. DD1 was so different with teething. She didn't get any teeth until 10 months & was hardly phased by it. Homeopathic tablets and meds when I knew it was bad always worked & didn't affect her sleep. I can see this 2nd tooth just breaking through so I'm hoping she'll get some relief soon.

Ahh the poor little love, I really hope that she gets some relief soon. If things are still not great once the tooth is through then we can see if there is anything else going on to cause the NW then.

This is so crazy. She woke at 1:15, it took settling, then meds, then a BF to settle her (about an hour) for her to sleep an hour, only to be up again at 3:30. It's now 4:30 and she is still not asleep. DH is in there now because I just can't handle this anymore. I just don't know what else to do.

Hugs for the bad night hun, I know how hard lack of sleep is. Did you say you had a post in naps too? What is the problem there? If your DD is short napping then this could cause OT NW you see, that is why I ask.

She does short nap sometimes but I can usually get her back to sleep easily in no time at all. I definitely think this was a teeth issue. I just don't know what else I can do for her.

Ok well all I can think of is obviously pain meds (which you are doing), have you tried teething gels or powders? The powders have been great for us along with pain meds, as they stop the general fussiness and unsettled behaviour that my DD gets when teething. Plus because they are herbal they can be given as and when needed.

Apart from that lovely all you can do is ride it out I am afraid. You will get a break soon when that tooth has come through. :-*

Oohh just spotted this thread hun and thought of you... http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=220948.0;topicseen

Not sure if that is your kind of thing but might be worth a go, the ladies on here seem to rate them.

Thanks Bex, you're sweet :) I use Hyland's homeopathic tablets, Tylenol & yesterday I gave Motrin (you don't think that could be it do you???). I've heard about the amber necklaces but wasn't sure if they really worked or not. I might give it a shot, what's there to lose? I think I might get the anklet though, the necklace makes me nervous. She is such a happy girl even after the rough night, at least there is a positive in all this. I feel so bad for her.

{{{{{{hugs}}}}}} Dana - Motrin is much better for teething than Tylenol - it's not just a pain killer but also an anti-inflammatory, and the gums can get really painfully swollen from teething.  we use Hylands and Tylenol in the day but Motrin at night.  And you know how similar our girls are ;)

Thanks Michelle. That's how I medicated her so far so I'm hoping for a better night (not that it could get much worse!!!). I also tried napping her on her belly today which has been working out quite well (could be coincidence because she's tired from last night) and she transitioned herself so I'm going to try that at bedtime tonight. She's been rolling for months but never did it for sleep. I know she has plenty of neck strength so I'm not worried. I never put her on her belly because I figured if she wanted to sleep that way, she'd do it herself (that's what R did, but I have to keep telling myself they're different!). We'll see what happens tonight....

So far so good with the tummy sleep, better naps for the past 2 days and last night was better too (I was the one who couldn't sleep  ::)). I only had to give the motrin before bed & then the pain must have been tolerable. Hoping for another decent night tonight :)

Fingers crossed for you. We also find that ibuprofen is much better for teething pain than paracetomol. Sending lots of good sleep vibes!  ;)
