night snacking in a 3 week old. How to handle?
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:48:40 am »
Hi
I have noticed a pattern with my three week old for the past week or so and hoping to get some opnions about whats going on.
my 3 week old has a feed at the begining of his bedtime ritual somewhere between 7:15 to 8:00, then ritual, and off to sleep no later than 8:45. He is doing reasonably well at the moment in settling to his night sleep. I dream feed at 22:50 and he usually starts making noises at around 2:20. with the dummy, he holds him for about 30 min longer. so around 2:45 - 2:50 he has another feed. this is usually a big feed, one of the biggest of his day (25 min for both breasts). straight back to sleep, again - usually setlles well. but then he hardly manages to go another 3 hours. at around 5:45 he wakes, dummy doesn't settle him so i figure he is hungry but he only takes a very small feed - (no more than 5 min, 10 tops, and just the one breast).  he settles down again reasonably well (takes him a bit longer but like other times doesn't need intervention) but then will wake somewhere between 7:30 and 8:00 hungry, taking a slightly bigger feed but not a great one. nevertheless, from this point onwards he would do 3 hourly feeds easily.
Should i be worried? is this snacking? should I avoid this? and if so, how?
Thanks.

I really wouldn't worry about this at all hun. :) At 3 weeks your DS is doing so well to settle himself to sleep. For such a young BF baby I wouldn't see these NF as a problem. It sounds like you are both doing great.

Absolutely not snacking.  He's doing great.  I wouldn't bother holding him off for that 30 minutes when he wakes seeing as it has been 3 hours + since the DF and just feed right away.  General rule of thumb is as long as they are going as long at night between feeds as they do in the day (so 2.5-3 hours at 3 weeks) then go ahead and feed.  There is also a growth spurt around 3 weeks so you may find a few days when he wants to feed all the time and its best to just go with it as it will really help your supply xx
