Thanks Kelly....we have been having really bad constipation issues and trying to figure out the cause!

He almost had to be hospitalized he was so backed up.  This has been going on since he was 4 months old but its getting worse and I finally decided to see a specialist 6 weeks ago.  MY DS just turned one 2 weeks ago.

So far he has been blood tested for Anemia, Lead, Celiac, Hypothyroidism, and a bunch of other tests to look for any inflammatory diseases or markers.....
He is currently on a ton of stool softeners and a laxative and a very fiberous diet lacking wheat and gluten b/c I know that makes things worse.....

Any idea on where to go from here???  I feel like its some type of intollerance that he may have.....

Also, I have seen the pictures on here of the red cheeks...my DS has been getting that too!!!!  Guess I should pay closer attention to when he gets them?? Its been quite frequent lately....

It would be a good idea to start a food diary to see if you can spot any patterns regarding a certain foods and your lo's symptoms getting worse.

I know dairy can cause constipation so that might be something to look at.

Ok, I will do that.  :)  Thanks

I hardly feed him any dairy but his formula has dairy in it and the GI dr advised against starting on cow's milk when he turned one for that reason, that it can make him worse.

I'd be suspecting a dairy allergy/intolerance as well... Can you try a hypoallergenic formula?

he hates hypoallergenic formula.  I tried it at about 9 months old and could barely get him to drink it.  I only tried it for 7 days and I thought the intollerance was causing restless nights and reflux more than constipation but it didnt help the nights or the reflux.  He was still on a ton of softeners for the constipation so it didnt really change anything there.  Are there any other substitutions?? could I just try soy milk in the dairy section at the grocery store?  I have to make sure I can get him to drink enough liquid during the day as that has some effect on his poops as well so I cant really play around with him not liking formula.

Soy can be naturally constipating so I would check with your lo's GI first. When we trialed soy formula with my ds it turned his poo turned to a chalk like consistency that was v dry and crumbly, his paediatrician did think this pointed to my lo having a soy allergy though.

I wouldn't try soy - if he has a dairy intolerance he might have a soy one too and like Kelly said, soy can be quite constipating. What about coconut milk?

Ok, I will talk to her about it. Thank you!!!

Mom to M&M, I could try coconut milk!!

The GI said that his xray has really improved and he is starting to clear out so I will go see her in 2 weeks and then we can discuss what is causing it.  But if its the milk (formula) maybe I should try something else in the mean time??

I am going to talk to my pedi tomorrow when I go for his 1 year checkup about all this and see if he thinks the way she is treating him is the right way.....

I'd def avoid soy also. Milk and soy are similar in make-up and E has reacted badly with both. Coconut milk perhaps. I can't tell on my phone how old your lo is? We still use Nutramigen and it took a bit but now she loves it and started it at 13 months.

I bought some eggs. Cross your fingers because it's not wheat or applesauce for sure. We go see our new Dr on Wed and I'm going to push for some testing. Hopefully by then we'll have had 5 days at least with the eggs.

My twins still constipate horribly with dairy. But a lot better than they were as infants.

He is 1 year, just turned on 12/27.  Does coconut milk have the same nutrition as cow's milk??

Coconut milk doesn't have the same nutrition but it does have some good fats in it. But if you want to attempt the HAF (which I would highly recommend) you can pm me and I'll tell you how I got E to take it. I'd recommend HAF over anything due to the fact that if there are allergies present and you have to trial foods you don't have to worry about the nutrition they're getting otherwise. Kwim? We had to take a lot of foods away from E and she was on a fairly limited diet over Christmas due to a food reaction and I at least knew that her nutritional needs were being met with the formula. And this is in no way to pressure you, it just took a lot of pressure off of us by having her on it if that makes any sense.

Either by a scratch test on the skin or by a blood test (in our case they did both, as scratch test showed nothing, blood test was kind of on the bubble, but they consider she is allergic due to reactions)

Hope the eggs go okay Vicki!
