confused by apparent contradiction between book and interview
« on: December 07, 2011, 23:45:02 pm »
I am a little confused by something i read in tracy hogg's first book, secrets of the baby whisperer and the interview that was posted on here.
In the chapter on sleep in the book tracy notes to make sure not to pat them to sleep as they will then have a sleep association with patting. i.e. to pat them till theyre calm but awake.
In the interview however she says she continues patting and shushing as she puts them into the cot and continues well up to 7-10 minutes to ensure they are safely into dreamland?
which is it?
does it perhaps depend on the age?

I can understand that it is confusing.  In the book she explaines using patting as a prop (which I think you are refering too) and using shh/pat as a technique to teach LO's to self-sooth.  With shh/pat it can take 7-10 min or longer initially to calm them but you always put them down sleepy but awake.  Using patting to put them asleep will become a prop.  Typically with shh/pat if used correctly will become less and less until baby falls asleep on their own.

I hope it all makes sense.  If you are still unclear please ask  ;)
