I introduced meat at 6 months. I started by making casserole type things with chicken and veg and then pureeing it all together.

I think with M about 7-8 months.  With R it was probably more like 7 months.

Around 7-8 months but then we only weaned at 6 months and introduced foods slowly due to his milk allergy.

It was actually one of our first foods, around 6 months.  My ped said that there's some thought now that meats should be one of the first foods babies get, instead of things like cereals or fruits.

I think the advice is wait to wean until 6 months but then go straight onto a variety of foods including meats.

Alexandra was just about 8 months... not because I didn't want to give it to her, I was just lazy about it LOL!  She is formula fed so iron wasn't an issue.

FWIW - meat is suggested as a first food in Canada for all BF babies because of depleted iron stores :)

We introduced it at 6 months... and i think that the canadian recommendation (i'm australian) is meat as a first food at 6 months for the iron....

Yes, in Canada it is now recommended to do meats first before fruits & veggies. It was taking too long to get through all the fruits & veggies if you wait the 3-4 day rule. They want you to get more iron in you babies. Although if you are stil BF then they will be getting plenty of iron.

Hi do you mean FF here? I thought it was because the iron supplies in the mothers milk depleted after 6 months?

the iron stores in the baby start to deplete, not in the breastmilk. The iron in breastmilk is more bioavailable than the iron in formula so although there may be less in breastmilk it is easier for the baby to absorb.

God.. the iron issue!! I swear everything i read says something different! I've also read that although it is more bioavalable it 'binds' to the other solids or something... making it not absorb.. I don't know. I have not given iron fortified stuff and have tried to get meat into him- but haven't panicked too much (we're BLWers). I think it's funny how the same information can sometimes say 'there's not enough iron in BM' and in the next sentence 'BM is the main source of real nutrition your LO needs till 9 months'... hmm....

Also just reading over this thread (it was a little old- i didn't even know what i'd written!) i'm AMAZED at the variations in recommendations around! Very confusing!

oh- and Seona- i'm in no way trying to contradict you.. i actually often quote your piece of information myself!
