32mos old dropping nap?
« on: December 09, 2011, 15:46:51 pm »
I hate even the thought of this....but maybe it's time my DS is dropping his nap? I wanted some advice because maybe we are just in an UT cycle. DS has not really ever slept more than 10-10.5 hours at night since he was an infant. He used to sleep 8:30-6:30 no problems. The last couple of weeks though he has really struggled to get to bed before 9 and is up by 6. He naps 2-2.5 hours around 12:30/1 everyday. I make sure he's out of bed by 3 if he's still sleeping so we can protect the nighttime. I feel like he still needs his nap, because he does get tired, but lately he's been able to push farther than 1pm to nap and it's been a little bit of a struggle at naptime too. We've had a couple of random days where he lays in bed for awhile, or plays in the car if we're traveling and just doesn't catnap until much later, but they aren't frequent.  Are we dealing with a lack of activity this freezing cold time of the year? The kid is running circles whenever he can, so I know he's well rested! He just can't calm down enough to sleep lately. I think lately he's only gone to sleep out of boredom, not tiredness. Do I limit his nap and see if that helps? Thanks!

If he's been napping 2-2.5 hours then you should have a while to go yet before he drops his nap.  You just need to start cutting it.  Maybe try 1h 45mins at first and see how he gets on.  Just cut it gradually and if he's still taking a while to go to sleep then you could cut it a bit more at a time.

Hi Scsparks,

I'm sorry I can't offer you any advice but I'm in the very same situation at the minute so just wanted to say Hi  :)

My son Kieran is only 22 months, he wakes at 8-8.30am and won't nap until 4.30pm at the earliest so of course when he wakes up from his nap 1-2hrs later he is totally refreshed and running around mad until 12-1am.

The girls on here are great and have suggested I start waking him earlier around 7am to get him to nap around 1.30pm then once I have established that I can start cutting his nap back to get him to go to bed at a more normal time.

Like your DS kieran has never ever slept more than 10hrs a night and I really don't think he will until he drops all his naps but i know thats still a while off yet as getting him to nap is a problem but when he's sleeping he can nap for 1.5-2hrs no problem so i know he couldn't do without it yet so for now I would be happy just getting him to go 7am to 9pm with a short nap somewhere in the middle  ;).
