Possible rice allergy?! Snack ideas!
« on: December 11, 2011, 21:41:58 pm »
Hi all,
Discovered DS was allergic to milk and corn at around 4 months old. He's now 8 months and we're very slowly working on solids (I'm panicking a little that he's "behind").
I was feeding him store-bought rice cereal and read the fine print that it may contain milk.  So I've made home-made brown rice cereal (rice ground to a powder and cooked) and I think he's reacted to it!
I haven't fed him any wheat products for fear of reaction, but I need snack ideas for him!
He can't eat Mum-Mums, Cheerios, rice rusks - for the corn and rice etc.
The only finger foods he's eating are small pieces of pear and peas!  I have been very slow to introduce new foods b/c it takes a good week for his rash/excema to clear when he's reacting to something!
ANY help would be appreciated!
Thank you!
Lindsay

You probably don't want to try rice again, but just in case you did (or at a later stage), LOs shouldn't have brown rice really as it fills their tummy too much, no whole grains.

On the recipes for babies and toddlers thread there is a link to a site with some good recipes, the one I mention there is for gluten free, egg free, sugar free cookies.  These can also be made dairy free (replace milk with water, replace butter with veg oil).
http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=62087.15
I have also listed the recipe on that page for the version I made (I never stick to a recipe!)

Basically these snacks are just oats and fruit.  I tend to call them flapjacks rather than cookies and they are LOVELY
If there is possible gluten intolerance do not use Quacker Oats, look for oats which are for sure gluten free.
You can use any dried fruit and experiment with it.  The bananas add a lovely sweetness throughout and I sometimes whizz up some raisins or prunes to do the same (then add some chopped to give variety of texture).
These are a baddy free, guilt free treat for the whole family.

Brilliant reicpe Creations - I shall give that a go for Olly!

Not sure this thread will give you any ideas? In the UK we have loads of little rice/corn puff snacks you can buy - Organix is the range.

Just posted a few variations on the cookies (same link).  Made exactly the same way but with different flavours, just to give some ideas for variety...and I ALWAYS make them as a square type flapjack spread out on the baking sheet now, it's so much less hassle.  Also, don't worry if you leave the mix to sit for longer than the 5 mins stated, if LO needs you this mix will sit fine in the bowl a good bit longer.

Silly me I said you can replace the butter with oil but already wrote the recipe with oil - I must have been thinking of a different recipe.

Buntybear - these flapjacks are quite a lot like the organix soft oaty bars, not as sweet and a bit chunkier as the oats and some of the fruit are left whole.  DS and I prefer the home made ones, I think the organix ones are too sweet and worry DS will get a sweet tooth if he has them too often.

Olly has an oaty bar a day as we are so short on foods for him! Would be good to try something home made.  ;)

Glad to have been of assistance.  The external link has some other recipes which would be good for food allergies too.

Be careful with all oats when suspected gluten issues are at play.  SIL has two celiac kids who both react to the oats labelled as "wheat free."
