What is the best thing to do during the "mantra cry"? We sing from a few feet away, which sometimes helps him settle, but I'm wondering if that's the best or if just to stay close by quietly. I'd love to hear others' experiences.

I suppose it depends on what your baby likes (and what you are comfortable with).  Tbh - Oliver always settles best without us (as a little baby just me singing his name helped)
L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

still happily married, just not counting!
