NW at 7.5 months getting worse. Please help!
« on: December 13, 2011, 15:23:53 pm »
Hi, this is my 1st visit to the forum although I started implementing BW tecniques around 6 weeks ago after my friend recommended it. We seemed to be doing so well. I managed to implement the EASY and within days it enabled my LO to sleep without being BF or being held and in his own cot. He started taking longer naps during the day (which was a god send) and another milestone was getting him to take a bottle so we can now do successful dream feeds and my partner can do more. Brilliant!  but progress has stopped.

He goes to sleep at between 7-7.30, seemingly relaxed, usually BF at 6.30 short activity and up to bed. He seems happy with a relatively short wind down, into pyjamas with a song, lights down, sit on knee and short story, then I lay him on his tummy (he wont fall asleep on his back) and within a few minutes he is asleep. The problem is that he then frequently wakes himself up throughout the night. Not every night but often once or twice before the DF, then at least twice before 3am when I BF and twice before he wakes and is BF at 7. We usually just shh him back to sleep without picking him up or sometimes pu/pd once and he is back asleep within a minute or two which is such an improvement on feeding him everytime which I used to do but why does he keep waking. He is taking more at his DF than ever now that he's happy with a bottle 6oz (and would prob take more if i gave it and he has a really big feed at 3 as well so I dont want to just cut it out (although it would be great eventually) For now i'd just be happy with sleeping for the 3-4 hours between the feeds. Oh and yesterday and this morning his naps only went through one 45 minute sleep cyle.

The routine generally is;
E-7am BF
A-
E-8.30am Solids
A-
S- 10-11.15 Nap
E- 11.30 BF
A-
E- Solids 1
A-
S- 2- 3.30 Nap
E- 3.40 BF
A
E-5.30
A
E-6.30 BF
7-7.30 -Wind down routine and sleep.

Not sure where i'm going wrong but it's really taking its toll on me now. Generally I have been blessed with a happy, smiley easy text book baby in all other aspects which has probably been the reason I've allowed it to drift this long but now I need some proper sleep. Hope you can help. Many Thanks.

Hi and welcome to BW. Great that you have had such success with your daytime routine. As for the NW... does your LO fall asleep independently or are there any props like holding/ rocking etc? Does your DS have a dummy/paci to fall asleep?

Hi, Sorry I didn't reply sooner. My LO had a bad cough and cold the last few days which threw the nights right out as I ended up feeding him more because he was coughing so much and refusing solids through the day but he seems better now and settled easily tonight at the normal time.

In the past I nearly always held him or fed him to sleep but since starting with the routine I quickly stopped feeding him to sleep and started putting him to sleep in his own cot, leaving him while he is still awake. He is brilliant at soothing himself to sleep. Sometimes he babbles for a few minutes he then turns his head from side to side (as he's on his front) then falls asleep. I dont even have to stay in the room. If I hear him fuss i'll go back in and shush him and he's fine. This is why its so frustrating through the night. In the past before implementing the routine i might've thought he was OT or OS but he still wakes when he's had both naps and a really chilled day. Not sure where we're going wrong. He's starting to wake a 6.30 and refuse to go back to sleep as well. Any clues?

I forgot to say, he doesn't have a dummy? I tried a few weeks ago to give him one but he doesn't really know what to do with it. He just plays with it. Takes it out, turns it around and puts the wrong bit in his mouth. He has a couple of soft toys in the cot with him but hasn't particularly shown any attatchment to them and doesn't notice if they're not there.

Is there any signs of your DS teething at all? This can play havoc with sleep. Also his last A time to bed is quite long for his age. This could be making him OT by BT and causing NW. You could maybe try adding 10 mins A time every few days to that second A time and see if you can push that 2nd nap later so the last A time before BT is shorter. Does that make sense?
