Sleep Cycle Length Question
« on: December 14, 2011, 15:08:30 pm »
Just a quick question... when do babies' sleep cycles get longer? My understand is if they wake at 20' it's because they can't transition from light to deep sleep, 30' is because they are OT or UT depending on the situation, and 45' is one sleep cycle. When does the sleep cycle change from 45' to 90'? My LO used to nap 45' on the dot and is now doing 1 hour and 33 min on the dot. So I'm thinking he might have lengthened his sleep cycle? Or all my hard work paid off?

My understanding is it's not that the sleep cycle lengthens but they can transition from one to the next without waking, or when they do start to stir they can settle themselves again.

So looks like your hard work is paying off! Well done!!

I was hoping it was my hard work ;) But at some point their sleep cycle lengthens right? I mean I don't wake up every 45'. I thought adults sleep cycle was 90' and yes we are better at making it through sleep transitions.

I have always wanted to know the answer to this myself! Anyoldways I read an article by some American Pead (sorry I cant reference it as I cant remember where I read it, so disregard if you wish!) and he stated that they lengthen out from 6 months of age. Not sure myself as I know sometimes I can hear DD stir at 40 (14 months) and even DS when he kips on the sofa will wake at 45 and he's 3. I shall try to hunt it out but dont hold out much hope!

Thanks Emma. I was just wondering if it was me and my hard work or just my LO maturing. It's funny because now he's 1hr and 33 min on the dot. He still "jolts" at 20' and sometimes thrashes about at 30' and usually can put himself back to sleep or needs a soother.

I'd say its more likely he's able to transition and is doing 2 solid cycles now. Well done you!!  :)

As they get older they do end up having a complete sleep cycle of 1.5hours os so which is what we do...but i have no idea when this changes. Certainly later than 1 though ;)
