Short feeding time-hind milk
« on: December 19, 2011, 19:39:19 pm »
My LO has recently started feeding for short periods of time- 2 mins max. Now am concerned that at 4 weeks he is underfed and not getting the crucial hind milk. At 4 weeks he nurses every 1.5-2hrs(both day and night). Am worried about his weight gain (was 2.8kgs at birth and is now 3.7kgs at 4 wks) How can I ensure he is getting the fattening hind milk?

Also I fear that sometimes I do not have enough breast milk especially for night feeds as my breasts feel so empty and I do not always hear him swallow. I would love to EBF for 4 months so please help ease my fears. Thanks.

Hi there,
Is your LO falling asleep while feeding?
Have you been getting him weighed regularly? Is he putting on weight (even if it's not a lot)? Plenty of wet nappies?
xx

Hi Tay,

No, he does not fall asleep, he simply stops sucking and pushes the nipple out, or sometimes holds the milk in his mouth.

Yes, I have him weighed every week. Wk 1 he was 3kg, wk 2- 3.4kg, wk 3-3.5kg and just this morning 3.7kgs.

He does have about 3 soaking wet diapers during day and 2 soaked ones at night...soothing (soaked as in diaper is heavy and sometimes soaps thru his clothes at night)

He's putting on weight well (above the average weight gain I got quoted by the child health nurse and that's based on an 'average' birthweight). Have you got a WHO BF baby weight percentile chart? That should put your mind at ease.

As an example of a baby not getting hindmilk: DS was 2.99kg born, dropped to 2.87kg and was gaining again by day 5 and was only 3.1kg at 4 weeks. He was screaming a LOT, green mucousy poos, very gassy and wouldn't sleep during the day. Once I block fed him, he put on 200g the first week, then 4-500g for a few weeks and once he had caught up, he put  on around 170-200g per week til he hit 4 months, then he slowed down.

He does seem like he's putting weight on well! And tbh I wouldn't worry too much if you have a content baby.
Now... if you want to have longer feeds and a baby that lasts longer between feeds... you could try extending each of the feeds by 5 or 10min at a time. Your  LO does seem to be feeding pretty frequently and that in itself would make him not feed that well and keep snacking.
How would you feel about that?
