milk intake for 1 year old
« on: December 21, 2011, 17:18:39 pm »
My DS will turn one on the 27th.  He is getting 3 top teeth at the moment and is severely constipated (being treated with meds).....2 teeth have broke through the skin last night....not sure if these are the cause of this, that is why I am menitoning it....

Anyway for the past 2 nights he has only drank about 3-4 oz of his bedtime bottle and he normally has 7 oz.  He acts like its poision....does it mean he is ready to drop a bottle or do you think its teething/constipated related?

Here is his schedule.....

wake 7
bottle 7:30 (5oz)
breakfast 8:30
nap 10-12

lunch 12:30
bottle 2 (5oz)
nap 3-4:45

dinner 5/5:30
bottle 7:30/8 (usually 7oz but he wont really drink)
BT 8/8:30

I would be willing to bet it is the teeth... I find that A won't finish her BT bottle if she is teething badly too - she tends to feel the pain more at night once she is already tired and no longer distracted with playing...

He only needs 12-16 ozs of dairy at a year of age and that does include what is in his food too...

How is the bum stuff with him right now?

Thanks Kara.  We are still dealing with this horrible constipation issue!! It was better and he was going like water so we had to back off the meds....I also told the dr that I was feeding him a gluten free diet and she told me not to b/c then we couldnt test for celiac.....So I started incorporating it back into this diet so we can test after the holidays.  Well Monday I fed him wheat pasta and boy am I sorry I did that!!! :(  So, to me, that tells me its pretty probable he does have celiac....I am also being careful not to have too much dairy in his diet either since the dr says that can make it worse as well.  :(

We have remedied the diaper rash for now.  Its like either he's going water or not going...... I wish we could get some answers and I could feed him a normal diet!!!

I can't believe she is actually going to test him for celiac... not many pediatricians actually do the test to be certain... most here suggest a complete gluten free diet with slow reintroduction to determine what is the problem (ie wheat, all gluten etc)..  the actual test is a small bowel biopsy.  My SIL's ped felt it too much to subject my niece to the gluten for the 6 weeks needed to get an accurate test... her reaction to it was enough to make her sure that she did have celiac.  Her reaction was much like Cole's  - OMG.

FWIW - wheat pasta could have caused a celiac response, but it might just be a wheat intolerance.

Thanks!!! They told me the test is a blood test.  So he needs to get blood work AGAIN!!!  I would need to not read food labels for 3 weeks and test him after the New Year.  THis doctor is actually a kids GI specialist. I even told them about the reaction he had with the pasta and they said just avoid stuff that I know causes problems....but if its a simple blood test, I guess its ok.  But I am also worried I am not feeding him enough gluten to give accurate results....He does have about 1tsp of oatmeal in his fruits/veggies to thicken it and I give him 1/2 of a nutragrain bar each day.  Do you think that is enough?? Sometimes I do give him cheerios as well but he only eats about 15 at a sitting.

So you think he could just be wheat intolerant?

Also, since I made this post, he refused his bottle before his nap today.....still sound like teething?  He is having stool issues today as well.  :(

The bottle refusal could be either.

The blood test for celiac is just a screening tool, it will tell them whether it is possible that he has celiac.  The only definite answer is a small bowel biopsy to see if there is physical damage to his intestines.

http://www.celiac.ca/index.php/about-celiac-disease-2/symptoms-treatment-cd/

Cheerios are oat based and only contain gluten if they are cross contaminated with wheat products - likely to happen but not guaranteed.  Baby oatmeal cereal is generally labelled to have "trace amounts of wheat/gluten" so again, no guarantee that it has any at all.  Even true oats may/may not be gluten containing...   The Nutragrain bar is wheat based so it could be the wheat or it could be all gluten.

My SIL was told by her specialist to eliminate completely then overload with whatever you are testing for with allergies/intolerances so that you get a very clear answer as to what caused the issue...

How long did she have to completely eliminate for?

What is a bowel biopsy??

So you are telling me that the diet I am feeding him may give me inconclusive on the bloodwork?

Any diet may lead to an inconclusive blood test.

The small bowel biopsy is surgery to remove a small piece of his bowel and have a look at it under a microscope for holes that occur when you have celiac and consume gluten.

Elimination is best done for 6 weeks with a massive reintro for 2-3 days.  Give the testing item a few times a day in large amounts...

Well he is getting worse! :( So they want me to do the bloodwork now.  I guess I will take him tomorrow. They said if the bloodtest comes back with abnormalities then they would do the biopsy to confirm since the diet is so strict.

This is horrible!! :(  I hate that he has to go through all this!!!

Huge hugs hun!  It's awful for him to go through it but it's better that you find out now than years down the road...

Ok Kara,
Help me....is it enough milk for him to have 5.5 oz am and then 7oz at BT?  Seems like since I have dropped the afternoon bottle his bowels are getting worse even after all this medicine he is on.  He does drink about 3 sippy cups (5oz) full of water with a little juice a day.  Shouldnt that be enough liquid??

Also, what do I do now to replace that nutrition of that afternoon bottle.  What can I feed him?? Here is his schedule now...

WU 7/7:15
bottle 5.5 oz 7:30/40
breakfast 8:30/40 (1 jar fruit and 1/2 nutragrain bar)

Lunch 12:30/1  (1 jar veggies, small portion of protein and fruit)

3/3:30 (fruit melts and baby mums)

dinner 5/5:30 (same as lunch)

bottle 7oz 8pm

I am trying to stay away from alot of gluten b/c I think that is causing some of the bowel issues. (bloodwork for celiac is supposed to come back this week)

Also, What else could be causing the constipation??

Per GI recommendations, he is still on formula and not cows milk since that tends to make constipation worse.....but they advised to switch to toddler formula.....so he is on Good start and I started mixing his am bottle 1/2 GS and 1/2 (enfamil gentelease toddler) that was yesterday....you think that is ok??

I think the change to the toddler milk could be the reason for the change in pooping for sure... any change to their formula can cause issues...  Why did they want to move him to toddler formula?

Wow - he drinks a tonne of water!  Alexandra is down to 16 ozs of formula most days (when not teething) and she drinks about 4-5 ozs of water with a little bit of juice in it each day - she isn't constipated at all...

Have you tried moving him from jarred food to table foods?  I have found that too much jarred food causes issues for Alexandra - I assume it's the lack of real fibre that fresh/steamed veggies/fruits have.

Gluten issues will generally manifest as loose poops.

Well, I just started the toddler formula yesterday and he has been getting worse over the last 5 days or so, so not sure that is it..... I just think they think the toddler formula is better nutrition after age one.

I dont feel like I have good control over how much he eats when he has table food....but I guess I can try to do more table food.  What kinds of veggies do you feed A?  Canned or fresh??  He just doenst like them and they are hard to chew.  LOL

The GI office just called me and his bloodwork is normal.....so now they want to see him again and possibly do another xray and talk about our next option....

Great news that his bloodwork is normal - but not good that we still don't know what is going on!  Sigh...

Why do you need control?  He knows what he needs ;)  I feed Alexandra whatever I can find!  I cut everything into bit sized pieces for her and she does fine!

Her faves are:
bananas
apples (i cut them up and then drop into boiling water for about a minute to soften them
ripe pears (no prep!)
avocado (no prep!)
grapes (cut into quarters)
steamed carrots/yams/broccoli
cheese
pasta - I find she does best with macaroni/penne shapes... macaroni doesn't need cut but I do halve the penne
bread/toast - sometimes she wants bite sized bits other times, she will bite it herself...
yogurt (I buy the little Danino ones for her)

The only jarred/canned thing I buy is mandarin orange segments cause they don't have the skin on them ;)

She also eats chicken/ham if I cut it into bite sized bits...

And of course, the usual gerber puffs/mum mums/arrowroot cookies/yogurt bites...

She is really into sandwiches right now and her fave is cream cheese and apple (I use it right from the fridge, just grate it with the cheese grater)... you could sub for the dairy though!  Or how about a tuna sandwich ;)
