puree's are bitter/sour
« on: December 24, 2011, 14:26:54 pm »
I'm making apricot and peach puree's for my 6 month old but they are really sour/bitter - can i add anything to it?

He's really constipated so that's why i wanted to give him apricots.

thanks

Are you using nice ripe fruit? If using fresh, try not to get the parts close to the pit.

They  may also taste less sweet than he would find them if you as an adult are more accustomed to sweeter tastes. They might taste plenty sweet to your LO. Definitely do NOT add honey for LO's under a year. If baby objects, perhaps add a TINY TINY bit, like a couple drops, of fruit juice to the puree, but seriously, not much, and be sure it's juice and not "juice cocktail" or other sweetened mixture.

For constipation you can also try prunes, or prune juice in with other liquids (some people add it to a bottle of EBM or formula).

I vote for adding some prune puree or prune juice. Works a treat for my kids when constipated!

And I absolutely agree about adding juice....make sure it's 100% fruit juice.

Most LOs will tolerate a variety of tastes even if they are not "sweet" so you may be surprised. I'd offer the food without anything first and see how it goes down...then have something on hand to add a bit at a time if need be. :)

I used to mix a drop of his formula in with any of his purees when I first started weaning.  Used it to mix it to the right consistency, and to make the flavour more familiar.  Worked a treat with fruits such as peach/apricot/apple which can be quite tangy/tart.
