Horrible naps
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:29:00 am »
DD2 is almost 10 weeks old now, her allgeries and reflux are under control :D We just moved and she is getting over thrush , also big sister came home after a long stay with Grandma so there is ALOT going on around and with her. I did have some good naps before DD1 came home but now it's 45 mins to the min and she will not resettle for anything. I cannot leave DD1 upstairs by herself for more then 10-15 minutes to put DD2 down for a nap or resettle. As the day goes on A times go down and DD2's mood gets worse till around 6 pm when she is so OT she is a fuss bum till 7:30-8pm when she finally settles for the night.
We do have "prefect" nights with her, DF at 10:30-11pm then she sleeps through till 6:30-7am, Here are my questions:
Should her first A time be longer then 1&15 minutes since she has a full nights sleep?
WHat should her A time even be at this age? I keep guessing from 1 hr to 1 hr 20 minutes.
How the heck do I entend naps with a 24 month old running around?

I can't say much as i HAVE to go to bed!! Basically once the naps drop to 45 minutes they are UT naps (undertired) and you need to push the A time. If you don't you end up in an UT/Ot loop, where she is UT for the first nap then OT for the second as 45 minutes can't sustain her. I found that with my guy no amount of nap extension worked if the A times were too short- so if it was 40-45 minute nap, in the cot, everything else being even (no loud sounds, not moving him out of the car) then i'd cut my losses, get him up and start EASY again. SOme shorten the next A time after a short nap as tht helps, i didn't but my guy isn't as sensitive to that.

Look at this link- it gives you all the details!

As to how you do it with a 24 month old... i dont have ANY BTDT experience, but i know next time around i probably won't even bother trying, i'll just use A time stretching.

FYI- Generally a 35 minute nap is an Over tired nap, so if you add too much A time to you LO too fast then you might get this- they suck, but it is easier to resettle them after one of these. Again- i never had success with it.. but others do!

Good advice from Katy, very useful link too.
Just want to add that A times are not necessarily the same throughout the day, some prefer a shorter first A, some a longer first A, likely a shorter A to bed if the naps have been short etc.  I expect many of your naps will be based around DD1s schedule too.
