DS takes forever to settle at bedtime
« on: January 07, 2012, 01:29:00 am »
My kids are almost 2, and in the last few weeks DS has been taking AGES to fall asleep at night.  For months he's babbled to himself for ~10-15 minutes, and we might have to do a loud 'shhh' from outside his door but then he was out.  But over the last few weeks he's taking longer and longer.  (Tonight it was an hour of babbling.)   It's frustrating because a) he doesn't sleep any later if he takes a long time to fall asleep, so he's getting less sleep than usual, b) he shares a room with his sister, who falls asleep quicker and is then woken up by his babbling/chirping/singing, and c) I can't relax till he's asleep!

He wakes up around 6:30, and takes a nap from 12:45-3:05ish (I wake him up – he'd sleep longer but I worry he'd take even longer to fall asleep if I did).

Any thoughts on how to get him to sleep sooner?
(I should note that I've had problems with him settling for bedtime in the past, from time to time - so I know he's either maybe teething? (though he's shown no other sign of teething), or else it's a sign he needs a routine or schedule tweak?)

Yes, and yes! Probably ;)  ;D

Firstly, it could well be down to 2yr molars. They cause trouble for a long time before they even start to show unfortunately. If you think this may be an issue then you could try medicating before bed to see if that has any effect.

I think, though, that he more likely needs a routine tweak. I would suggest that because the nap is quite long, he's just not tired enough at BT. Have you tried capping it? I'd try bringing it down to a maximum of 2hrs (if not maybe 1.5hrs) for a few days and see if that helps.

It's probably the start of the 1:0 nap transition unfortunately :( It's a long road though (my DS is 32months and we're still in the thick of this transition after it started at around 24 months!) so you've probably got many more months of napping left, but you'll probably find you are constantly needing to tweak as his sleep needs change over the coming months. Having 2 going through it together will probably be fun!  :-\  ::)
