Hi,
I have a 4 mo old baby who suffered from severe colic, wind and heartburn until he was approximately 2 mo. He was such a bad sleeper that some days he went about 14 hours without sleep. He just couldn’t with all his pain and discomfort. We did everything we could to sooth him, and yes, I know, with a lot of accidental parenting, but we had no other way. When he could slip, he would awake several times due to gas or colic.
After 2 mo, he changed completely. He became a very soft and happy baby, but he got addicted to his dummy. He would sleep by himself with it, but last weeks he was waking between 3-20 times a night and I was going crazy. So we decided the dummy had to go and we started PU/PD last Friday. First days were really hard as he would cry an average of 45 minutes. One time it took me 2 hours, but I didn’t give in. Since yesterday he didn’t cry anymore, but while doing PU/PD I started singing for him. Do you think that it might become a prop?
The third night he slept for the first time for 6 hours, but last night he regressed and woke at at 3 am, 6h30 an then 7h30 . I don’t think he can self sooth yet as every time I have to do PU/PD (he will cry during night wakings and when I pu/pd to extend his naps).
I feel as we are going on the right way, but I guess he sometimes wakes from hunger. I usually do not DF as I always have trouble to get his sucking reflex, so I wait until he wakes.
Question is, what should Ido to make him wake less times overnight. Should I stop feeding him (I usually feed him twice, one of the times would be equivalent to a DF). He won’t take more food during the day and I have tried hard to do so. He his stubborn and spits if I insist.
Answering questions:
He is on a very flexible EASY routine, starting around 7h30 (when he wakes) and feeding every 3 hours.
He usually naps between 30 min to 1,5 hour between feeds (short naps are frequent)
Bedtime is around 8 pm. We bath every 2 days, change diaper, feed and put him in his cot.
I bresfeed two sides (for about half hour in total) and complement with bottle-feed (intakes vary between nothing and 150 ml, usually he will take around 90 ml).
Wakes per night when he had his dummy varied from 3 to 20! After Wednesday it have been 3 wakenings. Usually he wakes around 3 but always at different times and then close to 5:30/6 and then around 7h30. He sleep seems to get lighter after 5 as he moves a lot.
When he wakes at night w cries hard (not manta cry). He would shut down most of the times when repluging the dummy, but at least 2 times a night he wants to be feed and usually falls asleep feeding after a long intake. – I am sure he is hungry overnight.
For A time he plays in his Gym in the morning, we go for a walk after his second feed (he falls asleep in the trolley), and in the afternoon I try to keep him more quiet in my leap or keep him in his seat.
There are no development issues
No cereals introduced.
Not sure if it is a prop because we don’t do it all the time, but he falls asleep with movement during car rides and when in his trolley. The big prop was his dummy.
No lovie.
Any help would be very appreciated.
