No breast thanks mum, only solids!! Only 6mths
« on: March 01, 2012, 09:41:42 am »
:o I am grateful because my 6 1/2mth old LOVES his solids.  He eats heaps at each sitting, but he is refusing breast feeds even when I give them before solids.  He wakes ravenous in the morning (still feeds at night), refuses a breast feed, and then will scoff his solids.  Last night he refused 3 feeds during the day.  he only fed for about one minute each time, his night then went like this:
6.30pm - feed
9.30pm - woke for a feed - drunk heaps - I usually dreamfeed but he beat me to it!
1.30am - feed
4.30am - feed
7.30 - woke & offered breast...DENIED!
8.30 - solids - had heaps
9am - bed
11.30 - woke, offered breast...DENIED! Fed for a few seconds and pulled off cross.
1pm - offered top up...DENIED! drunk for a few second again
1.30pm - sleep
3.30 - grizzly...offered feed - denied AGAIN! Tiny amount
5pm - Scoffed solids - meat & veg, whole banana for dessert  :o
6.30 - feed - fed a bit more when he relaxed, still not a massive feed though. Fell asleep during this feed.

So, that's been our last 24hrs.  What is happening?? ???

He's replacing his milk feeds for solids.  That is a huge amount of solids for 6 months.  The reason you are getting all the NWs for milk now is that BM has many more calories per oz than any solid at this stage so he's waking hungry as he's not getting the calories he needs during the day.  I would cut right back on solids until his milk intake increases again.  Milk needs to be the biggest part of your baby's diet until 1 YO especially now.  I found at 10-11 months I relaxed and dropped a feed.

My DD2 did this at 7-8 months and i stopped solids pretty much completely for a week then introduced really slowly again and made sure milk intake didn't decrease again.

HTH x

Agreed with Shiv, a whole banana at 6.5 months is way too much and that was just his pudding! He won't be getting the correct quantiites of nutrients without his milk. I would cut RIGHT back too. A couple of spoonfuls max.
