Does banana cause constipation?
« on: January 22, 2012, 00:27:05 am »
My baby is 6.5 mo and we started with fruits 2 weeks ago. He was doing great.  But today we tried banana and he is now constipated. Is it possible that banana causes constipation?
Thanks
Alexa

Yes, I think banana can be a very constipating food!  I would stop it for a few days and try something else instead, maybe trying pears (or going back to it if you've already tried them).  :)

I was thinking.......Is it possible that he ate too much banana? He ate 1 banana in a day (in 2 meals), is this too much?

It's definitely possible, especially since he's still so little, a whole banana is a lot.  Maybe try less banana, but try to alternate it with other foods that are easier to digest.  Pears is always the first that comes to mind, but maybe there are others?  I am a little rusty with solids introduction!  LOL

Agree with Em - pears are good to ease constipation and are very gentle.

Very ripe bananas are laxative but an unripe or just ripened banana is very constipating.

A whole banana is far too much at this age.  I would limit baby to an inch of banana once a day at this age :)  My DD is 14 months and only gets half of one once a day, every couple of days ;)  Half of a medium sized fruit is a serving for a 1-2 year old child.

We stipped banana for a while at that age as it bunged Olly up. Prob went back on it at 11/12 months, maybe longer. One banana at 6 months is A LOT, they are very filling too. I have one for a snack in the morning and it keeps me full for hours. Your LO needs to be hungry enough to get an adequate amount of milk.

Thanks I'll give me some pear and next time I offer banana I'll give him less.
So, I'm thinking that he may be eating too much solids.  He is still drinking his milk anyway, but he eats almost one fruit a day. If it's pear, he almost finishes one fruit, divided in two meals. What do you think? Should I limit the quantity he eats?

As long as he is drinking enough milk to meet his calorific and nutritional needs then I see no reason to cut back on solids. Just keep an eye on his milk intake and if it does drop then just cut back slightly  :)

We avoid bananas like they're poison...they are very constipating, and my dd is prone to it, so we don't touch them.  And agree that for his age, just a few spoonfuls would be enough...and only if very, very ripe.   But I just don't buy them, period.   :(

Thanks for your help! I was also wondering if I may offer him some cheerios as finger food or is he too young?

If your LO likes banana you could try mixing a small amount (about an inch) with some cereal and milk. That's probably not enough to cause constipation if you just giveit once a day. My DS likes that, I use baby cereal or ready brek. He's 6mo and I also give him Cheerios sometimes though most of them end up stuck to his clothes.

I would hold off on Cheerios for a couple of months yet, they don't dissolve all that well and can cause Lo to choke... you could offer a mum-mum though... They do melt very quickly and are good for learning to hold things and bring it to their own mouth...

Another note with Cheerios - unlikely that he has a pincher grasp yet and could get very upset with trying ;)

We did cheerios here with both LOs at 7mos and neither had any issues with them.  Great for pincher grasp practice!
