3.5 month old suddenly waking hysterical HELP
« on: January 25, 2012, 00:14:28 am »
My DD has been on easy since 8 weeks old. She goes to sleep around 6:30 pm, then wakes to feed at 2:30. After that, she's on about a three hour sleep, eat until 7:30 when she finally wakes up. This has been working great for her for the past month and a half. Until now. The past week she's been waking up a few times a night screaming hysterically and completely inconsolable. Last night, she hit and scratched at my husband for about 10 minutes before I took her and she finally calmed. Is this normal? We are going a bit crazy thinking something is wrong. She's also begun crying hysterically at odd times throughout the day. No fever, no teething. Any ideas?

Hi there, do you think that your DD seems hungry in the night? How long is she awake for and does she eventually settle back to sleep without a feed? How have you been settling her?

There is a big growth spurt around the four month mark , so it may be that. Does your DD have any medical issues like MPI, reflux, etc?

My DD has reflux but is growing out of it. She's had stomach aches in the past associated with it, but gripe water usually works wonders for her. Perhaps it is the growth spurt, but she's never behaved like this before. We always feed her whenever she wakes up but when she wakes this time, it is difficult to get her to eat. She spits out the food and cries hysterically. Nothing really works. Eventually, she exhausts herself. Then and only then am I able to get her to eat. Lately, I've been sleeping with her on her floor because of this problem. I know it sounds bad, but she's adopted and so then we get to thinking that maybe something is going on with that as well. So, I'm just hoping that this isn't too far fetched for an almost four month old. I've just never heard her cry like this. My husband was almost crying the other night because there is simply nothing you can do to make her feel better. I'm hoping it is just a phase (a quick one at that). But, is this normal? This crazy scratching, hysterical crying, out of control behavior? She went from sleeping 8-9 hour stretches to less than three now. During the day she'll just randomly break out in this hysterical crying. Poor girl. We just want to help her but we don't know what's wrong.

Hugs - you mention she is growing out of reflux, TBH it suds like she is in discomfort and that could be what is causing it. Is she on any medication for the reflux? Has she been seen by a dr in case she has an ear infection. A lot of refluxers peak a 4 months and there is also abuse GS at this time.

Does she havea paci? These can help keep the milk down, calm the crying and settle refluxing LOs

The other thing is teething...do you suspect she has a tooth coming?

Hang in there x

Hi there, totally agree with Sara about the reflux. It sounded like it to me from your first post which is why I asked if your LO had it. Also as Sara said reflux usually peaks at 4 months and often they don't grow out of it until nearer 12 to 18 mo. What do you think?

Well all of a sudden, the night time hysterics have stopped. I'm leaning towards perhaps teething, but I don't feel teeth yet. The crazy thing is once the night hysterics stopped, my DD completely changed-like over night. She's more deliberate in her play, is trying to roll over and will sit and look around for 45 minute increments. It's very very odd. However, I'm not complaining!! Thank you for your suggestions. I hope we are past the hysterics.

That my dear is a wonderweek... We had the worst one at this age...screaming murder for 3-4 nights at midnight for hours. I know my LO was touchy as so usually they are not that bad lol.

Zacsmumme,

Well, I am glad it is OVER!! Our DD is also a touchy one and so if yours was anything like mine, bless you my dear. WHOAH! This past week has been amazing, however. She discovered my hands, then her hands, is now sucking her thumb. Oh so many things this week. Thank you for responding. I completely forgot about the "wonderweeks." Thank you thank you for reminding me of them. I feel so much better now. I seriously thought something was terribly wrong!

They really throw me through a loop too. FWIW that 4 mth one was our worst. No others had so much night screaming! The only other one close to being that bad was ~7.5 months. amazing when you see such a difference too though isn't it. I know Z certainly had a rough one, but of all my friends we also had the most notable jump all at once too, so you take the good with the bad right ;)

And I like this blogs WW descriptions
