Hey Bex -- I log his routine daily.  The times and things change from day to day depending on what time he woke up but this was his routine on 2/29/12 --this was a good nap day

up at 6:40
E - 6:56/7
A
N - down at 8:55, sleep by 9
     - wakes 20 minutes into nap whining but put self back to sleep by 9:30, then up for good at 11:10
E - 11:30
A
N - 1:15 - 3:25
E - 3:35
A
N - 5:30 and we wake him at 6:45 p.m. (this used to be only a cat nap but now he could sleep 1.5 - 1 hr 45 min if we let him)
A
E - 7:35
Down for bed at 8 p.m

What he's been doing is taking a longer 3rd nap and shorter or broken up naps for the first 2 naps of the day.

Hmmmm well those naps look great hun, if anything your DS is in danger of getting too much DT sleep! LOL. ;)

Have you seen these sample routines to get an idea of what others are doing?... http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=164029.0

I wonder if an extra 10 mins A time would work to extend naps and your day, so that then you could shorten the CN to say 45 mins. Do you think that your DS would cope staying awake an extra 10 mins or not?

I've tried keeping him awake anywhere from 2 hr to 2 hr and 30 min and he's not having it lol.  I've been trying this for about 2 weeks now.  Its a stretch just to keep I'm awake for 2 hours.  At about 1 hr 45 minutes he starts yawning, and rubbing his eyes and getting really fussy and demanding my attention in order to stay awake and not crying for another 15 minutes.  Then I take him up to his room and change him and do our nap time routine thereby getting maybe an extra 5-6 minutes awake time out of him but that's it.  There have been times where I've managed to keep him awake for 2.5 hours but it was usually because we were out and about and he almost always falls asleep in the car and wakes when we get home and refuses to go back to sleep.

I've also tried keeping him up longer in the afternoon and cutting out the cat nap, he isn't too keen on that either.  he gets extremely fussy and needy and this is right around dinner time for us so its really bad timing.  Yesterday he had his 6 month doctors appointment which means he got shots which means he was and is in a very foul mood needless to say lol.  But when we got home from his appointment it was time for his 2nd nap, i let him sleep for 2 full hours instead of waking him after 1 hour to eat (it had been 4 hours since last feed by then) and even then I had to go in a wake him.  He was cranky and clingy and generally not happy until I fed him and even then he wasn't 100% back to normal.  But this time it was around 5 p.m. so I kept him awake and skipped the cat nap and we put him down for bed at 7-7:30 (fed again before bed).  He has the absolute WORST night sleep that he's had in a long time last night.  Up at 11 crying and fussy and tossing and turning but eventually put himself back to sleep after about 30 - 40 min, then up again at 1:30 tossing, turning, whining and fussing then he'd started playing and then put self back to sleep only to wake again at 2 doing the same thing.  I eventually went in and fed him 5.5 oz bottle at 2:15 because I remember reading that when a baby wakes at random times then they are hungry.  He instantly went back to sleep after he finished his bottle.  Only to wake up AGAIN at 3:50 alternating between whining, playing and dozing off.  he did this for a full hour -- didn't go back to sleep till 4:50 ish.  Then slept till 6:30 tossed and turned and back to sleep then up for good at 7.

I am thinking the shots and teething are playing a major roll in his overall grumpiness but regarding the increased activity time, I just don't think he's ready for that.  do I keep trying or will he eventually stay up longer on his own?

Hi there, so sorry in the delay in getting back to you, I have been ill for the past few days.

I think that the shots will have had a big part to play in your NW, we always had awful nights after shots. How have things been now? Any signs of teeth? Have you tried meds before BT to see if that helps?

You know your LO best so if you think that his A times are ok then leave them as they are for now and eventually he will be awake for longer. The average A times are only a guide and some babies will need more or less.

This sounds like my story exactly! Minus the success. My ds is almost five months and on a very consistent 4 hour routine except at night! He wakes every two hours. I do a df and a nf at 11p and 4am. Then fight through til 7. He is swaddled and given a paci every time. I'm thinking I need to wean him off the paci. How exactly did you do that? And how can I help him find his thumb? Did you put him on his tummy side or back when you decided to start weaning the paci?

Hi

I just want to pass on info on how I got rid of paci. My daughter had it from about four weeks for a month but she became obsessed with it so that I was replugging every 45 mins. All night!! I don't know if age makes a diff but younger babies have a strong need to suck and she was a very sucky baby ( now almost 6 months). So I would let her suck paci for 10 mins prior to sleep times and during routine then when I put her in cot (always awake or drowsy) if she cried for it would give back for a minute till calm then remove. Repeated as often as necessary. It only took a week and she hadn't had paci since. But not sure how well it would work with older baby. Hth x
