Size of finger food
« on: February 05, 2012, 02:02:49 am »
Hi  :)

I'm thinking of offering my 8 month old DS finger food but i'm not sure of the size. If I was offering carrot or even toast should i cut it into small pieces (like pea size) or long strips so he can hold it better?

Thanks. This is my second child but i cannot for the life of me remember how I started DD on finger food  ::)

Hi Lj1982, Long strips are better as he'll beable to hold them better and manage them in his mouth. Pea sized is too small just yet for him to hold and will just frustrate him. Also- babies have a bit of a protective thing where if they can pick up the size of food they can manage it in their mouth (not nuts... or hard things..), so don't be tempted to pop a small piece of food in your LOs mouth- just let them grab it!

Oh- and already i have no idea how i started some of these things with my DS!!

I think my son was around 9 months when his pincer grip really got good.  Before then I used to offer things which were big enough to hold and nibble from (because it's ages before they learn how to open their hands to eat what's left).  But tbh he was always a bit rubbish at eating from strips of food and it was only when he learned his pincer grip that he 'got' finger foods.  Apart from cooked carrot that is.  He'd always eat that and now always asks for more!

Yep we started with sticks of veggies (broccoli florets, carrot batons, sweet potato) and fingers of toast, sticks of cheese, rice cakes then we moved on to bite-sized pieces and then smaller stuff for pincer grip. C had a really good pincer grip quite early though.

Enjoy it!

Thanks everyone :)

I have a horrible fear of choking so I wanted to make sure I was going with the safest way. When giving toast should I give the crust as well?

Hopfully he won't spit it at me like he does his pure...apparently thats hilarious lol.

Well- i do cut the crusts off... but you probably don't have to.. they all just get mashed up in the mouth anyway.. And there are PLENTY of ways for babies to be 'hilarious'.. finger foods manage to drop off the side of the high chair tray very easily!! (That and the open cup as a fingerbowl/shower is also fun!)

Remember too while they are learning babies will gag- this is where they poke out their tongues and some food may come out.. this is how they learn not to put too much food in their mouths.. it's VERY different to choking. My guy will do this and then go right on eating!
