3 months old waking earlier and earlier at night
« on: February 07, 2012, 14:07:03 pm »
Hi, I'm currently in the process of re-establishing my easy. We got sick and kinda lost it a couple weeks ago. My lo is just over 3 months and we are on a 3h EASY though rarely get the perfect day. If we do, it is because I have extended at least one or two naps.  The issue is with me finding the window for the good nap, as her tired signs are very hard to read!

Our feeds are at 7, 10, 1, 4 and 7 though sometimes it ends up being more like 7, 10:15, 1:30, 4:30-45 (depending on pick-up of my older daughter) and 7. We are doing a df just before 11 of about 4oz of expressed breast milk. We have on night waking at around 3am. I know she is extremely young still but I'm a little concerned that she is reverting backwards. A month ago she was waking later in the night between 4:30 and 5:30 on good nights. She even slept through a couple times.  Since the cold I can't get the later wake-up times back. She fluctuates anywhere between 3:05 and 3:20 on most nights... She is drinking a full feed though I work to keep her awake and when she wakes around 7 she is not all that hungry! Should I be concerned about this waking become a bad habit? I really don't want to revert back to two nf.... She even woke at 2:50 on Saturday night. I extended the time with shh pats but it took almost 1h and she only stayed asleep another 30 minutes. I have tried increasing her intake during the day by offering both sides twice. She usually accepts to stay on longer for two feeds and often gets a second let down, however, for the 4pm feed she is happy with only one on each side. Any suggestions? Is it still too early to be concerned and should I just let things settle?

It could be oe of three things in my opinion
Hunger and or GS?
Change in sleeping habits; around this age They change the way they sleep and Los start to cycle in and out more like adults. They stir every 2-4 hrs. At these times they are vulnerable to waking and needing help to settle.
something else is causing her to wake, noise,  cold...but it's hard to tell with these ones.

Prolly at is age I would feed. As long as the feeds were more than 3.5/4 hrs apart if you know she can go that long at night. We also had this funny 4/5am feed around this age but Z just couldn't quite last till 7 so I justs offered to top him up when he woke for the day and eventually the feed went.

I'm bf.

I think I have ruled out the gs. I tried tanking up the last two nights and it helped the first but backfired yesterday. Two nights ago she woke at 3 and talked for almost 45 minutes before getting annoyed. I thought hunger was mostlikely not the issue so I shh patted her back to sleep. It took just over 30 minutes, no fussing but she woke after 45 minutes of ds. I fed around 5 and she slept until 7. I tried the same last night but she almost completely refused her df. She woke at 2:30 and resttled on her own until almost 4am... I fed since thought hunger was the issue at this point.

Tonight I was thinking of just doing a df and seeing what the night brings. I don't think w2s is worth it now and depending on how long she has been down I will play by ear. I'm not opposed to feeding her at night if she needs it but would like to avoid creating a bad habit. My first was so great at night I forget that it is normal for them to still wake at this age.

OH and thanks for your input. Also, I'm pretty sure she is comfortable temp wise and noise is minial but I guess it's hard to tell.

I think especially for a Bf baby that she is normal :) some can last longer than others..For me a rule of thumb was that if LO woke less than 4 hrs ( if on 4 hr feeds during day) then I didn't feed but if close to, or at 4 hrs+ I would feed.

That is what I am doing now. I just had longer at some point so don't want her reverting even more. Last night was 3:30 so I fed. That was a 4.5h stretch. Thanks

Hello!!  I am wondering if you have an update on your situation because it sounds very similar to mine.  My dd was 3 months old yesterday.  She is on a similar 3 hour EASY to yours (at that time).  About 3 weeks ago, she slept through the night for the first time (8:30ish to 6:30ish with a df).  She did that several nights, though not in a row.  If she didn't sleep through, she'd only wake up once and it would usually be later on in the night (4am or so).  Well, after a little while of that, she started waking up earlier and earlier in the night.  Then it was 2x/night.  The past 3 nights, she's done much worse...waking up increasingly often.  I'm not sure whether to feed her or not at a given waking because it seems like she shouldn't need to eat that much if she had been making it through the night.  But she's only 3 months so I certainly want to make sure I feed her if she's genuinely hungry.  Just don't want this to get worse and worse like you were saying.  Last night I had a really hard time getting her back to sleep and when she did get back to sleep, she'd wake again less than an hour later.  I'm wondering if it might be a growth spurt?  I'm trying to increase her feedings during the day (she's bf) in case it is a growth spurt, but she doesn't seem all that interested in eating sometimes.  Also, we've been using a paci more and more lately.  She used to not take one much, but now it really helps her get to sleep.  Sometimes, she spits it out before she goes to sleep and still gets to sleep.  Other times she spits it out during and stays asleep.  So I didn't think it had become a prop, but now with the frequent night wakings, I'm questioning it.  Anyway, wondered how things are going for you and if you have any advice.  Thanks!  :)

Hey sorry for the last response I just checked the forum.

Yes I have an update. She ended up getting up really early one night and I let her fuss off an on for 40 minutes (not crazy cyring though) and she resettled until 5:45. I fed but she played until 7 and only at that time did she fall asleep until 8:30. The following night I just decided to do the same with the first waking. It was at 4:45 and she resettled in less than  20 minutes without me going in and slept until almost 7. Since those two nights she sleeps until after 6 most mornings.

Based on what you said I think you need to switch to a 4h EASY. If you delay the transition sometimes that can cause night wakings. I would try a couple good 4h EASY days and see if that fixes the nights.

Thanks so much for responding!  I've been holding off on the 4-hour EASY because my daughter is on the smaller side, and I'm not sure she's ready to move to four hours between feedings.  On the other hand, I do wonder if she'd sleep better on a 4-hour EASY because she's been doing a lot of catnapping and seems to be able to handle longer A times pretty well.  So I'm a little unsure of what to do since I can't really change the sleep routine and not the eating routine.  Her nighttime sleep has gotten better (thank goodness!), but she still hasn't slept through the night again.  She's just waking less than she had been and gets back to sleep more easily when she does wake.  Anyway, I appreciate your response.  I guess I'm just sort of waiting things out for right now.  Hope things are still going well with your daughter!

My babies were on the smaller side as well (6 lbs 6 oz and 6lbs 12 oz). They both did fine with the 4h EASY by 4 months. Things are well on our end just cut the catnap and consolidating the new two nap routine.
