It may be benign, or it may indicate some kind of DNS problem, which is what I was suspecting. Unfortunately, there is not much I can do about that from my end.

However, you say you are getting 'server problem messages'. Do you mean the 'server not found' message that you mentioned before or are you getting different errors too?

Right, one thing we can do is try to eliminate DNS. I won't make any more assumptions, but you need to edit the file /etc/hosts and add the line
Code: [Select]
188.64.185.238 babywhispererforums.comadd another line the same, but have 'www.' in front of babywhisperer.com. The forum won't let me paste the line correctly.
You will need 'root' or 'sudo' access to do this. Lemme know if you need help doing this.

After you have done this, reboot and see how things get on. This effectively bypasses DNS for the domains, ruling it out (or not) as a cause of your problems.

Thanks Tom.

I do mean the server not found message, yes.
What is DNS?  And yes please on the help.  I do have root/sudo access.

Another thing I noticed, maybe nothing at all to do with the problem, but often when I'm waiting I see the info where it say something like 'looking for babywhisperer.com index page' or something like that, I also often see it repeatedly looking for 'lilypie', the ticker site.  Could this be causing a delay?? Think I should just remove my ticker?

I just noticed that the format of my text got corrupted. It was late and I did not spot it. The above instructions have now been modified.

As for the tickers, it won't be just your ticker that's slowing it down, but any ticker displayed on a page so you can't really stop that.

Just wanted to update on this problem.
Without changing anything I'm no longer getting the server not found problem or long delays.
I worked out (eventually) that British Telecom was in the area and I think they were messing with the lines, but hopefully updating the lines.  This could well be what caused the problems as the vans now seem to have disappeared and all is back to normal.

Thanks for your help and sorry I was a pain!

Oh me too!
I really thought it was going to be the end of my BW days it was becoming impossible.
It's wonderful to just be able to click on pages now though!
