Oatmeal everyday?
« on: February 15, 2012, 11:38:21 am »
Hi quick question about rolled oats.....is it bad to feed my DD rolled oats every morning....I either warm them up with milk and add fruit or let them soak overnite in some fruit juice then add some fruit in morning and serve cold....just not sure what other cereal to feed her, she doesn't like weetbix, she loves toast and pancakes etc but yeah a bit stumped on other cereals???
Thanks,  Charly.

I don't think there's anything wrong, just might be a bit boring!  Also natural rolled oats aren't fortified which can be good for young kids to have a fortified cereal.  Tbh we used to alternate between ready brek (fortified fine unsweetened oats) and weetabix but now he's a toddler, I give him own branded versions of rice krispies, mini shredded wheat, shreddies, cornflakes (not very often, they have a bit of salt in them), special K (original version) etc.  As well as pancakes, toast, fruit, yoghurt...

Do try doing some pancakes.  A faff for one morning but then you have stacks in the freezer to get that 'organised' feeling for ages!

DD alternates between readybrek and weetabix most days with the occasional eggs on toast. We make pancakes every now and again with blueberries but she doesn't enjoy them anywhere near as much as we do!! :P

She has occasionally had rice krispies so might try them again...

We don't hv readybrek I dont think....I'll try some rice krispies maybe. Yeah she has yogurt and toast and stuff too and muffins, but just didn't know if i could give her things like cornflakes or shredded wheat or special k, she's 13months now. She loves pancakes but yeah bit of a mission to make but once you hv u hv heaps to use up in freezer so that's good.  How do I know if there is too much sodium/salt in cereals ? What is a high number for sodium on packaging?

Multiply sodium by 2.5 to get the salt content.  I think it's 2g a day for toddlers so I eased up a bit at that age.

I'll be honest, Charly.  I eat exactly the same thing every day.  So I don't think anything is wrong with feeding your child the same thing every day as you have been.  Just me though.  :D

yeah- as long as across the day you are getting a range of nutrients i'd say you're all good! Especially if the food you are having every day is a good food like oats..

I have porridge for breakfast every day - I don't think there is anything wrong with it! The only reason my girls don't have it every day is because sometimes they ask for something different, so I think that you will know when she is fed up with it.

DD has fortified baby oatmeal with some applesauce mixed in every morning... she loves it and it's good for her so I go with it ;)  There is the odd day that she doesn't want it, then I give her a yogurt and some Cheerios (they have very little sodium/sugar in Canada!).
