6week old no routine atall, drinking in dribs and drabs
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:11:15 am »
Finding it impossible getting my lo into a routine, he never finishes a full bottle, sleeps in short bursts then waking up acting starving only to drink a little bit but then continue to act hungry. He has recently been diagnosed with colic and silent reflux but has improved since starting on a lacrose free formula (was breastfed prior to that and cried alot) and has gaviscon before feeds to help with reflux, howevr he is still so fussy with feeds and sleep it driving me mad :(. How do I get him on a proper schedule as at the moment there is no set times for anything, I am led by him which is feeding every 1-2 hrs and sleeps less! Help!!!

The fact that he is still so fussy about feeds suggests that the reflux isn't under control and that is more than likely having an impact on feeds and sleep. Gaviscon is only a milk thickener  (I'm assuming you are UK and on infant gaviscon powder) and doesn't help acid reduction so I would take him back and see if you can get meds prescribed, Ranitidine (zantac) is usually the first choice for babies.

You could also ask about trying a hypoallergenic formula instead of the lactose free one, lactose intolerance is very unusual in babies, but cow's milk protien intolerance is much more commonly a cause of reflux.

{{HUGS}} it's really hard, I have two refluxers so feel your pain.
