Rice cereal intro = runny, watery poop?
« on: March 05, 2012, 16:24:04 pm »
Does anyone know if it is normal for your babies poop to get watery and runny after introducing rice cereal?  My LO is 5.5 months, EBF and generally extremely regular with yellow, seedy poop.  1-2 poops per day.

Last week I started rice cereal, 1 tbsp per day for 6 days.  Every day he had a runny, watery, yellow diaper.  Then Thursday he stopped pooping completely until Sunday.  Very abnormal for him.

Is this a normal reaction?  I thought it was supposed to make the poop thicker??

Cereal can be very rough on babies and can certainly be constipating.  Perhaps cut back on the cereal and try something gentler like pears or squash.  Lots of tips in the FAQs too!

i talked to my doctor and he said to stop solids for now as that isn't a normal reaction.  i used EB Whole Grain Rice Cereal, I wonder if the whole grain was too rough on his tummy.  I feel terrible that I gave it to him for 6 days!  Everyone said expect their poop to change and i thought that was what it was, but once he stopped going i was sure something wasn't right and stopped.  He was mostly happy all the time, just extra gassy and watery poop.

The doc suggested trying sweet potatoes or oatmeal in a week or two if he returns to normal.
