when can newborns start sleeping through night?
« on: March 10, 2012, 22:18:01 pm »
Hello,
I just had a DS a week ago. I know that in the beginning I am on HIS schedule with feedings and wakings but when can I start with a more "schedule like" plan or training? Like when do you start PU/PD? And if not for a lot longer...do I just keep to his schedule until then?

Hi there. Congrats on the birth of your LO. Have you read any of Tracy's Books? Secrets of a baby whisperer is great from NBs.
You can start EASY from birth really since it is a routine where you do the same things in the same order but not to a strict time schedule. This link may help you.

PUPD is for lo's over 4mo but is a last resort in sleep training.
You are at a great age to just try to set the scene and put LO awake and not get into using props hopefully.

Congratulations on your new little man!

Have you read any of the Baby Whisperer books or the FAQs here on the site? They will answer most of your questions with at more detail than I will get into here.

In short, BW is very baby focused - we definitely have routines in order to give our los a predictable series of events, but it's always based on our babies and their cues. There is no strict schedule per say. I don't know whether your breast or bottle feeding, but either way you can expect night feeds to continue for quite some time yet. Some lucky moms get babies who sleep through at 2mo, but often babies need night feeds for much longer than that. Just think that baby's only job right now is to grow - he needs constant calories to do that!

You can begin to teach independent sleep now using shh/pat (see FAQ for details) but pu/pd is not recommended for babies younger than 4mo.
