Toy ideas for 1st birthday –Lo not rolling/crawling/moving

Ds is one on Saturday (St Patricks day) and I just want to get him something small to give to him on the day(Probably more for my 4 year olds benefit) but as dd has a lot of the big toys that last…mini trampoline, sand table, outdoor play house, blackboard (have a palsctic rocker thing but ds is nto really able for that yet unless we hold him on it) and ds has trike which you push for now but cycle later…something small would be fine so looking for an idea for a toy other Lo’s love..doent have to be expensive….one of ds’s faves is stacking cups(doesn’t stack them but he puts them into each other and puts other things into them or anything with bits, blocks etc).

Or something that might encourage moving in some way…getting braver and reaching out further for things from a sitting position so think he is getting there.

Any ideas appreciated,

I got this for my one year old, her 3 older siblings love it too!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/IM-Toys-22050-Melody-Mix/dp/B000KRNBFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331580435&sr=8-1

You might get it cheaper if you shop around. It was £39.99 when i got it. She does love it and plays with everyday.

Thanks Katy, had seen the toy thread but not the other…just had a quick look…some good ideas, ds is seeing a physio so have daily excercises similar to some of the stuff suggested on her but great to have different takes on them.

Kirsty that looks great….think ds would love it.

Got him something like this today :

could also be useful for the physio excercises. Thanks for the recommendations!

Oh fiona- i should have thought- that is almost hamish's VERY FAVOURITE TOY!! And great for physio exercises, general play, rolling and chasing- he thing;s it;s HILARIOUS!!

Kirsty- i LOVE LOVE LOVE that melody centre!! Beautiful!! I'll have to see if i can chase it here!

Can i ask fiona- are you seeing a physio because he had some complications early on putting him at risk of some delays, or just because he's a little behind on his milestones?

Hey Katy,
Great to ehar your LO loves it.
Yes agree kirstys toy is great…never saw it before!

Ds was an IUGR (born in 2nd percentile at full term)baby… (rate of growth had notably slowed down at 35 week but may have been earlier and fluid was very low at 38 weeks)..then he had loads of feeding difficulties and silent reflux so was impossible to feed and fell and stayed off the charts. He is doing great now…on high calorie formula and reflux meds but gaining and such a content LO but as  a follow up to his hospital stays he was  refereed to the physio who sees him every 1-2 months, it is just in gross motor skills that he seems to be a little behind, physio felt it was all due to lack of energy due to lack of feeding ..its only since 8 months that he has been gaining weight well!

It's amazing what the poor nutrition can do. I was seeing a litle guy through my work for a while and this was his issue too! BUT he came up to par pretty well with a little guidance from the physio and mum getting some good nutrition into him!!

Awh that is reassuring Katy….going back to the physio last week with exercises she give us 4 weeks ago I really felt he had made huge progress as a result of them and so did the physio.  Ds took to solids well(at 8 months) and we are aslo seeing a dietician so feel he is doing great in that way too. His pead says the will keep an eye on him in case there is more to it and at the time I was concerned but as time goes on I can see lots of improvements and feel he will be just fine. Did notice he wasn’t responding to sounds and slowing to pick up gestures/actions but also found out he has glue ear so that would explain the delay there also so keeping a close eye on that. Do you mind me asking what area you work in?

I'm  speech pathologist and i work with kids with disabilities- this particular boy also had glue ear but they didn't know- it was crazy- between the very poor nutrition (terrible reflux- needed a NG tube) and the glue ear they thought at 2 he had a developmental delay/disability- but once they got the food sorted and the glue ear fixed he was no longer in need of specialist services!! If only all our guys could be 'fixed' like that!! It's good that the paediatrician is keeping an eye on him- better to be sure. It's hard- you of course want it all to be as 'simple' as the nutrition and the glue ear causing problems, but it's really important for your litle guy to be picked up early if it's anything else...

Gosh Katy that little boy sounds v like my ds so good to hear it was just those things causing his issue. I agree though, I am glad he is not signed off with the hospital yet and they are still monitoring his development as I would be very anxious to intervene early if there was more to it or even if those issues alone needed early intervention. Ds has had glue ear for a while but as he is young they are just monitoring it at the moment as he does not get ear infections (just a non stop runny nose and gunky eye all winter which have just eased iff this week as the weather improved) and he is too young yet to tell if its affecting his speech though I do worry if  a little hearing loss now when he would be listening and learning and pick up words will have an affect. Thanks for your replies.

It is a bit of a concern with the glue ear early on- and ideally you want there to be no hearing issues ever- but there are heaps and heaps of kids who have issues with glue ear for YEARS and then as soon as it's fixed pick up all the lost ground very fast! So try not to worry too much- as long as you are being monitored.
