is there a such thing as too much solids?
« on: March 13, 2012, 21:34:13 pm »
DH thinks DS is eating too much, or that I over feed him.
Breakfast- 3-4tbsp infant cereal, one jar of fruit, and a yogurt(adult size of activia), plus cheerios or toast fingers with jam/peanut butter
Lunch- 3-4 tbsp infant cereal, one jar of fruit, 1/2-1 jar of vegetable or a 'meal type' food, plus puffs strawberries  cheese as finger food
Supper- 3-4 tbsp infant cereal, 2 tbsp of fuirt, 1/2-1 jar of vegetable or a 'meal type' food, plus puffs blueberries or veggies as finger food.

This week we are hoping to make egg, chicken and beef peices as finger foods.

Thoughts?
DS is 8 months old. Has 3 milk feeds a day, usuallty one at 8oz the other two are 4-6oz.

I do think that is a lot of solids for an 8 month old. Some babies at that age are still moving from 1-2 meals a day.

Are you offering solids ~45mins after his milk feeds? At this age milk is the most important. I would be tempted to suggest moving back to 4 milk feeds a day, cutting back on portion sizes of his meals and then if you think he may be hungry offer a small snack (by small I mean like some finger food fruit or a toast rusk)

How are his nights and poops?

I agree with Sara, try to increase the formula and back off on the solids a little. But then, if he'll take 3-4 full formula feeds a day and still wants lots of solids, I wouldn't consider it a problem.

I was told that I should cut back on my DD1s food intake -- both formula and solids -- because she was taking a lot (I think her record was 12oz of formula, promptly followed by a couple of small jars of solids) and was quite big for her age. But whenever I tried to cut back even a little, I had a very cranky baby. And guess what, at 28 months she's in size 5-6 clothing, about 95cm tall and 21kg. Completely proportionate but muscly and tall. So it really is about the big picture.

E is always happy, poops around 3 sometimes 4 a day, normal poops the occasional hard one but rare. He STTN from 7pm-7am with no NF since 4months old. He STTN regardless of whether he has 4oz or 8 oz before bed. I offer solids, 1 hour after a milk feed. E has always been a bigger baby, weighing 22lbs now and in 18month clothes.

Well if he is having that much solids after his milk (I wondered if you were offering it before) and his bowel movements are normal, he is happy and eating healthy food then I wouldn't worry too much about it :)

MM- my DS was like this. I wouldn't worry at all. As long as he's taking his milk still and he's happy, don't worry! My little guy was super big also and still has a big appetite!
