6 month old NWs just increasing
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:09:04 am »
Hi,

I'm new to this board so not sure if this has been discussed but I need help! My 6 month old son who was exclusively breastfed untill a week ago (When he turned 6 months) now wakes up 4-6 times at night, and yet by 2 months he only woke up once or twice. It seems to get worse by the week.

He goes to bed between 7 & 7.30pm, and first wakes at 11.30pm, BFs and goes back to sleep. Thereafter he wakes almost every 1 to 1.5 hours, sometimes every 2 hours, clamouring to BF, and then goes back to sleep. Is he really hungry or just wnats the comfort of the breast? He can put himself to sleep, so I dont think its that.

I did notice he feeds more at night and isnt that interested during the day. Is it beacuse he tanks up at night?

Please help. Cant go on like this and considering trying the Baby Whisperer's method to sleep train him.

Was he sleeping well until you started formula/solids?
I womder if the solids are upsetting his tummy. What have you tried? How are his poops?

No he wasnt sleeping well. He started to regress after 4 months which was expected, but it just keeps getting worse not better. and his poops are normal, same as when he exclusively breasfed, except thicker, with a peanut butter like consistency.

What are you doing at the NW? It sounds like maye you have a prop issue where your LO needs you to get back to sleep. What do you think?

It very well may be a prop issue, although 2 out of the 5 times he wakes up he deosnt want to feed. He just stays awake and moves around his bed and then goes back to sleep o his own after 10-15 minutes. But even then, I have to pick him up or pat him first before he'll settle. If I dont, his whining just intensifies to  cry.

So if its not a prop issue it could be routine. Can you post your EASY?
Do you suspect there is any discomfort? Can you see any teeth coming, do you think he wakes with a sore tummy, any reflux?

EASY is as follows;

A: 7.30
E: 8.00 BF
A
S:9.30-11.00 or 11.30
E:11:30 Solids
A: 11.30-1.30
S:1.30-2.30
E:2.30 BF
A:2.30-4.30
S:4.30-5.00
E: 5.00 Solids
A;5.00-7.00
S: 7.00-7.30

I dont think he has any discomfort, teeth havent come yet although can see some white underneath the gums of his front bottom teeth. No reflux.

For a 6 month old his A times are very short. I think for him to sleep more soundly at night you need to xtendthose A times. 2.5-3 hrs is more appropriate for his age. You can gently push those A time out over a few weeks. What do you think?

Thanks. Will try it and see how it goes. Also going to try not to BF feed him for 2 of the NWs, and see how it goes.

Good luck. If you are going to not feed then (if possible) you may want DH/DP to resettle those ones so that you dont cave. It can be tough but you may find its easier than you think with some shh/patting and extra cuddles x
